Obituary for Lucy C. Pohl

Mrs. Lucy C. (nee Weiler) Pohl, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, June 7, 2016 at her home in rural Belgium.

Lucy was born October 3, 1924 at the Weiler homestead in Kaukauna, the fifth of seven children of Peter and Margaret (nee Ott) Weiler. She attended St. Francis Parochial and Junior High School in Hollandtown until the tenth grade, and graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1942. After graduation, she worked alongside her widowed mother, brothers and sisters until she was 25 years old. Her father’s passed away in 1940 when Lucy was 15. She also worked for two years in Sheboygan.

On October 8, 1952, Lucy married John Pohl at St. Francis Catholic Church in Hollandtown, Brown County, WI. The couple worked side by side dairy farming most of their married life. They crop farmed after retiring from the dairy business in 1988. After John’s passing in 2012, Lucy continued to reside on and manage the family farm.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, St. Nicholas Chapel, and had been an active member of the Christian Women, organizing parish fundraisers and serving luncheons for family reunions and funerals. She belonged to the Luxembourg Society of Wisconsin and was honored to be named Luxembourg Festival Duchess, with John as Duke, in 1992.

Lucy was a very devoted wife and mother, placing her family’s welfare always at the forefront of her thoughts and actions. Lucy loved children, especially her grandchildren, whom she described as her greatest joy. She also cared for many young children when their parents needed assistance. She loved to travel with John and their children, traveling most of the lower 48 states, and visiting Luxembourg and Germany after retirement. She liked to garden, read and quilt in her spare time. Lucy gifted her quilts to family, friends and missionary groups. She enjoyed researching her family history and recorded it for future generations. Faith, family and friends were very important to her.

Lucy is survived by her children: Anthony (Susan) Pohl of Glendale and Mary (David) Shaw of Belgium. She is further survived by her grandchildren: Aerndoren “Aernie” Burns of Madison, Karolynn (Olumide) Faulkner of Farmington Hills, MI, Shannon (Douglas) Williams of Kenosha and Isabel Shaw of Washington DC; great-grandchildren: Graham Williams, Mikayla Faulkner and Lael Faulkner; sister Celia (Francis) Hoelzel of Kaukauna, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, infant daughter Helen, son-in-law Richard Burns, grandson William Shaw, siblings: Mary (Peter) Kirk, Margaret (Cyril) Thiel, Julia (Edward) Hoelzel, Theodore Weiler and John Weiler, father and mother-in-law Anton and Mary (nee Bettendorf) Pohl and brothers-in-law Wilmer and Joseph Pohl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 noon on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at Our Lady of the Lakes, St. Nicholas Chapel, 4274 Hwy K, Dacada. There will be a rosary service at 9:45AM on Wednesday at the church, and the Pohl family will receive visitors from 10AM-12PM noon. She will be laid to rest at the parish cemetery beside her husband.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to be donated to children’s charities in Lucy’s name.

The Eernisse Funeral Home, Belgium is assisting the family with arrangements.
