Obituary

William Robert "Bob" Rathsack, businessman, teacher, and a friend of many, found peace on October 8, 2017 at the age of 84. Bob was the beloved husband and partner of Fern L Rathsack, loving and proud father of Beth (Jouko) Salko and blessed with grandchildren Sofia Salko and Gabriel Salko who gave him many pleasurable and memorable moments. Bob was born February 2, 1933 to Martha Tillman in Cloquet, MN. William "Bill" and Julia Rathsack prayed for a child and Bob was sent to them. They gave him the love, direction, and life skills that made him the caring, successful, productive individual he became. After high school Bob graduated from UW Superior. And with his master's degree from UW Milwaukee. He proudly served his country during the Korean War with the US Army. On December 22, 1962, he was united in marriage with Fern Kottke at Peace Lutheran Church in Rosendale. The couple settled in the area and Bob taught elementary school. He later became an administrator for different schools in the Burlington area before the couple moved to Fredonia in 1973. Mr. Rathsack then began his career with the Northern Ozaukee School District. He retired from education but did not lose his interest in youth. Bob served as a forensic judge, on the board of the Feith Family YMCA, the Northern Ozaukee School Board and the Northern Ozaukee School District Scholarship Foundation and continued to support their causes The flag was important to him as was evident with his involvement on the National Flag Day Board, where he served as chairman and a judge for the national essay contest. A highlight each year was reading the essays submitted; his faith in youth was renewed as he read the words of support and pride expressed by students grades 5-12 as they addressed the theme "What the Flag Means to Me." Bob served on the Village of Fredonia Board of Trustees and was President for a number of years. He was also a member of the Fredonia Lions Club, holding numerous offices including President and Secretary. He was recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow and Knight of Sight. He was a member of Fredonia American Legion Post 410, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5373 and an active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Port Washington where he held many leadership positions. A highlight of his life was the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to Washington DC in November of 2014. In the early 1980's, Bob got up at 5 am on Thursday's for five years to go to St. James Church in Milwaukee to help prepare a warm meal for the "guests" who needed a warm meal to start their day. He was dubbed the Sunrise Servant. Bob and his wife enjoyed travelling, especially cruising to such locations as Alaska, Hawaii, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, and the Caribbean. Trips across Canada and Finland were also highlights. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and vegetable gardening. Survivors include his wife Fern L. Rathsack, daughter Beth (Jouko) Salko of Grafton, grandchildren Sofia Salko and Gabriel Salko, sisters in law Cirena Lenz of Fairwater and Marie (Paul) Veleke of Ripon, sister Ellen Barth of Milwaukee and brother Roger (Patricia) Finn of Portland, TX. He is preceded in death by his mother Martha Tillman, parents William and Julia Rathsack, parents-in-law Emil & Irene Kottke, sister-in-law Audrey Kottke, brother-in-law Keith (Carol) Kottke, brother-in-law Winton Lenz and granddaughter Faith Salko. Funeral Services will be held at 6PM on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 420 W. Whitefish Rd., Port Washington, followed by Military Honors. Pastor Kelly Nieman-Anderson will preside. The family will receive visitors on Sunday at the CHURCH from 3-6PM.
