Obituary

Mr. Bill Bunyan of Port Washington, formerly of Janesville, passed away at Ascension Columbia- St. Mary's Hospital Ozaukee in Mequon on Monday evening, May 2nd, 2022, while surrounded by his loving family. He was 74 years old. William was born in Hartford, CT on October 21, 1947, to John and Elsa (nee Strong) Bunyan. He attended local schools and graduated from Forest Park High School in Baltimore. Following his schooling, Bill proudly served in the US Navy. While stationed in Milwaukee he met Chris Catania; they were united in marriage on February 24, 1968 in Bethesda, MD. The couple moved to Wisconsin shortly after and settled in Milwaukee where they began their family. They later moved to Janesville. While there, Bill continued his education and earned a degree from UW Whitewater. Bill worked as a salesman for various life insurance companies, most notably American Income Life Insurance, for 20 years. In 2008 Bill and Chris moved to Port Washington and Bill heeded the call to become a teacher. He worked within the Port Washington-Saukville School District as a substitute teacher at the high school, and dabbled in coaching football beside his son, John. As an avid Civil War buff, he truly enjoyed teaching History the most. Mr. Bunyan was a member of St. John XXIII Parish. He enjoyed golf, playing chess, and reading history and biographies. Bill was a born story-teller and natural charmer. His natural ability to welcome and comfort others will be greatly missed. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Christine, and their children William (Rhonda) Bunyan, Jr., of Middleton, Julie (Neil) Walkoff of St. Louis, MO, John (Sheri) Bunyan of Port Washington, Laura Bunyan, also of St. Louis, and Matthew (Stephanie) Bunyan of Las Vegas, NV. He is further survived by nine grandchildren: Anna, Maggie, Samantha, Michael, Cooper, Jack, Jake, Abby and Grace, sister Joan Burleigh of Fort Bragg, CA, niece Sabrina Gomez, other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret and brother John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Thursday, May 12th at St. John XXIII- St. Mary's Church, 446 N. Johnson St., Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will preside. The family will receive visitors at CHURCH on Thursday from 9:30AM until Mass begins at 11AM. If desired, memorials are suggested to the donor's charity of choice in lieu of flowers.
