WILFRED M. MAECHTLE Mr. Wilfred Maechtle of Holden Street in Port Washington passed away at his home early Monday morning December 20 2004. He was 84 years old. Wilfred was born in the Town of Port Washington on January 8 1920 the son of Elmer and Rena Haberman Maechtle. He graduated from Whitefish Bay High School in 1937. He entered the US Army and served overseas in North Africa Italy and Germany with the 183rd Signal Repair Co. On January 10 1945 he was united in marriage with Alma Harrer at the Grand Ave. United Methodist Church. The couple built their home on Holden Street and Wilfred worked as a Telephone Repair Technician for Western Electric in Milwaukee. He repaired switchboards and worked on some of the first wireless phone systems for cars. Wilfred was a longtime member of Grand Ave. United Methodist Church in Port Washington where he was a trustee and usher for many years. He had also participated in the Adult Fellowship and Keenagers programs. He enjoyed going to reunions for the 183rd Signal Repair Co. tinkering with electronics and radio equipment repairing and inventing things. He liked bicycling and had built a few bikes from scrap parts walking the beach here in Port and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Wilfred was an avid newspaper reader and an archeology buff as well. He is survived by his wife Alma of Port Washington 1 daughter Susan (Dennis) Merrill of Port Washington 2 grandsons: Dennis II (Amy) Merrill of New Glarus and Peter Merrill of Waukesha and 1 great-grandson Tyler Merrill of New Glarus. He is further survived by 1 sister Marlene Berke of Sheboygan Falls nieces nephews other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers: Kenneth and Gerald Maechtle. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday December 30 2004 at 6:30 PM at the Grand Ave. United Methodist Church 505 W. Grand Ave. in Port Washington. Rev. David Guse will officiate. Inurnment will take place the next day at Union Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Thursday at the church from 5:30-6:30 PM.
