Bill was born in Oconto on May 7 1933 son of William and Ann Coyowite Lee. He attended local schools and graduated from Oconto High School in 1951. Bill loved the water and spent his life near it at all times. As a boy he boated and fished with his father on Green Bay. In 1952 he joined the Coast Guard and served during the Korean War. Mr. Lee was an avid sailor and boatbuilder. He always owned a sailboat (making many of them himself) and the family spent their free time either working on the boat or sailing the boat on Lake Michigan. Bill and Gina sewed their own sails for their sailboats and they decided they should become sailmakers. In 1976 Bill left his employment at WI Electric after 17 years as a project engineer to become a full time sailmaker forming W. Lee Sails. They had many loyal customers in Wisconsin Illinois and Michigan. The couple worked full time constructing and repairing sails until their retirement in 2004. Besides sailing Bill enjoyed Harley riding fishing and vacationing in Florida as well as boat building ice-sailing on Big Cedar Lake woodworking and reading. He was a natural navigator and taught his children and crews to sail with charts and other non-mechanical methods long before the Loran came into being.
