Obituary

Wayne Schmidt, of Fredonia, WI, passed away on July 18, 2026. Wayne was born on March 29, 1945, to Alvin and Clara (nee Drews) Schmidt in Oconomowoc, WI. In 1965, he was united in marriage to Christine VanNess. Together they had two children, Corynne Bigelow and William Schmidt. Later, in 1988, he married the love of his life, Jean Muroni. They were married for 12 years before her passing in 2000.

Wayne spent his career working in various financial roles, in Wisconsin and California. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending his time volunteering at the Ozaukee County Humane Society. One of his greatest joys was hosting four foreign exchange students during his retirement years, in which he took great pride.

Wayne was known for quick wit, and his sharp sense of humor. Over the years, he cared for numerous canine companions, of which he adored.

Wayne is survived by his daughter, Corynne Bigelow and his son (son-in-law) Shawn Bigelow, and his son William Schmidt; his grandchildren, Vanessa Bigelow and Keirstin (Kyle) Yekenewicz, Terisa and Katrina Schmidt; great grandchildren Nora, Lucas, Greta, Arianna and Clare; his cousins Diane (Joseph) Hrobsky and Jim Lindl. He is further survived by many relatives and friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Clara, his first wife, Christine, and his second wife, Jean.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Ozaukee County Humane Society are appreciated.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Sharon S. Richardson for their compassionate care in his home and at their facility. An additional thank you to his personal caregivers, Kelly McWilliams and Susan Cruslip, and Gretchen from Sharon S. Richardson.

A memorial service for Wayne will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Eernisse Funeral Home (1600 W. Grand Ave, Port Washington, WI 53074) at 12:30 p.m. The family will greet visitors from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
