Virginia Lee, 80 years old, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on November 18, 2017 at St. Clare's Hospital, Baraboo, while visiting with her daughter Lorie. A 54 year resident of Port Washington, she had moved-in with her daughters Lucy and Linda in Monticello, WI, 2 years ago due to failing health.
Virginia "Gina" was born on September 21, 1937 to Bernard & Rachel Olson Schaefer in Viroqua, WI. After graduating from Stoughton High School class of 1955, Gina entered a diploma nursing program at General Hospital, presently Meriter Hospital, in Madison, where she met "the love of her life" Wilbur "Bill" Lee. They eloped on July 26, 1958. Gina and Bill were lifelong lovers and best friends.
Married for 54 years, Gina & Bill raised their three daughters: Linda, Lucy and Lorie, in the community of Port Washington. They moved to Port in 1961, purchased a home on Scott Road and lived there until 2015.
Gina was an avid sailor. The family always owned a sailboat (many of them made by Bill) and the family spent their free time either working on the boat or sailing the boat on Lake Michigan. Bill and Gina sewed their own sails for their sailboats and they decided they should become sailmakers; in 1976 they formed W. Lee Sails. They had many loyal customers in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan. The couple worked full time constructing and repairing sails until their retirement in 2004. When Gina wasn't on the water with Bill, she could be found with him on their Harley, riding around the country on long trips. The couple also enjoyed vacationing in Florida. Bill preceded Gina in death in 2013.
Gina was a member of American Legion Post 82 Women's Auxiliary and the Port Washington Yacht Club. She was also an active and founding member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. She shared her faith with her family and neighbors with Good News Clubs for children, visiting the elderly, teaching Sunday School and Communion classes, and being a deaconess in her church. A woman of faith she helped shape her daughters' faith and taught them by words and example to love and serve God in the community and in church.
Gina is survived by her three daughters: Linda Shannon of Monticello, Lucy (Randy) Whyte, also of Monticello and Lorie (Jeff) Vesterdahl of Baraboo, ten grandchildren: Sean (Lynn) Shannon, Jodi Shannon, Scott Shannon, Jeremy (Jenny) Whyte, Jacob (Brittney) Whyte, Luke Whyte (fiancée Natalie Brunner), Tracy (Michael) Carbonara, Billy, Brian, and Ben Vesterdahl. She is further survived by five great-grandchildren: Brian & Anna Shannon, Brooklynn & Kennedy Whyte and MaKayla Carbonara, one sister, Diane ( Henry) Merry,of Scottsdale, AZ, two nieces, a nephew, other family and friends.
A glowing Christian, Gina had recently said she wanted to go home to be with her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ and be reunited with Bill. The family that she leaves behind is comforted by that knowledge.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30AM on Saturday, November 25th at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 420 W. Whitefish Road, Port Washington. Pastor Dan Krahenbuhl will preside. Gina will be buried beside her husband at Union Cemetery in Port Washington. The family will receive visitors at the CHURCH on Saturday from 10:30AM until services at 11:30 AM.
