Mr. Vernon J. Schmit of South Garfield Street in Port Washington passed away at Columbia St. Maryrsquo;s-Ozaukee Campus in Mequon on Friday July 3 2009. nbsp;He was 73 years old. Vernon was born in Belgium on July 14 1935 the son of Ralph and Emma Mueller Schmit. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1963. On September 17 1960 he was united in marriage with Joyce Schueller at Holy Cross Catholic Church in the Town of Belgium. Vernon was employed at Simplicity in Port Washington for 38 years retiring in 1998 as the facilityrsquo;s manager.nbsp; He remained involved at Simplicity following his retirement by organizing the annual Retireersquo;s Dinner. nbsp;Mr. Schmit was a dedicated member of St. Maryrsquo;s Catholic Church where he was president of the Finance Board a member of the Menrsquo;s Club and assisted with the Fall Dinner. He had previously enjoyed coaching youth sports for Port Catholic School and bowling at Bleyrsquo;s Recreation in Port Washington and more recently had become involved as a volunteer with Interfaith Caregivers. Vernon was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren never missing any of their games or events. Mr. Schmit is survived by his wife Joyce of Port Washington and their 3 children Gary (Pamela) of Grand Prairie TX Beth (Frank) Hoppe of Waunakee and Steve (Amy Jo) of Random Lake. He is further survived by 4 grandchildren: Alicia Garrick Gretchen and Adam 3 brothers: Ronald (Diane) of Fredonia Ralph ldquo;Buddyrdquo; (Gloria) of Port Washington and Richard (Sharon) of Belgium 3 brothers-in-law: John Gahan of Port Washington Fred Jr. (Cel) Schueller of Holy Cross and Ronald ldquo;Butchrdquo; Schueller of Fredonia 4 sisters-in-law: Bernice Schueller of Belgium Mildred (Killian) Burton of Belgium Carol Flerchinger of Port Washington and Pearl (Thomas) Paradeis of Appleton nieces nephews other relatives and many friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Friday July 10th 2009 at St. Maryrsquo;s Catholic Church 430 Johnson St. Port Washington. Father Thomas Lijewski will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Maryrsquo;s Cemetery Port Washington. The family will receive visitors on Thursday evening July 9th from 4-8PM at the Eernisse Funeral Home 1600 W. Grand Ave. nbsp;Port Washington and again on Friday morning July 10th from 10-11AM at the CHURCH. In lieu of flowers memorials are appreciated to St. Maryrsquo;s Parish.
