**** CELEBRATION POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE*********
Although her life was cut short by cancer, Sue truly lived. Not only did she work hard to better the lives of people and the Milwaukee community, she played hard too. Sue was blessed with a loving husband, wonderful siblings, great friends, and therefore, lots of laughter. She loved books, food, baseball games, ballet and symphony performances, traveling the world, volunteering at Milwaukee Irish Fest and more.
Sue was proud of her Irish and Polish heritage. Her ancestors included those who shaped Milwaukee – the peasant fisher folk of Jones Island, builders of St. Josaphat and St. Stanislaus, early members of the South Shore Yacht Club, as well as, farmers, bootleggers, Great Lakes pirates, a grandfather who was the proprietor of the Nomad (legendary Milwaukee bar), and a great-grandfather who was an early member of the Wisconsin State Legislature.
Sue graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a degree in Political Science. She started her career working at an alternative high-school, went on to work with at-risk youth, and became a certified AODA Counselor. She ran an award-winning neighborhood improvement/anti-crime program recognized by the Department of Justice as one of the best in the nation. Her grant writing expertise brought millions of dollars in funding to Milwaukee, most of which was used to build better neighborhoods and improve the lives of at-risk populations. She will continue giving to her community, in accordance with her wishes,
Sue's brain was donated to the Froedtert Brain Bank to further research into treatment of glioblastomas.
Sue is survived by her devoted and loving husband Kenneth Schmidt, brother Donald Kenealy, sister Kay Kenealy (Ned Smirl), stepson Evan Schmidt, nephews David Jr. and Christopher (Courtney), great-nieces Jasmine and Delaney, and great-nephew Wade. She was preceded in death by her brother David Sr.
Due to restrictions on public gatherings triggered by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the March 21st Memorial Service for Susan M. Kenealy has been postponed to later this year. The new date, time and location will be announced as soon as possible. Thank you for thinking about Sue and being flexible in this challenging time.
True to her Irish roots, Sue relished in a good story – so we ask that you take time to share your favorite Sue story with us in advance of Sue's Celebration of Life event. Please forward your story to Ken Schmidt at skune3121@gmail.com, or Kay Kenealy at kkenealy123@gmail.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial donations be directed to Hope House of Milwaukee or CelticMKE.
