Sook-Hui Kim Peterson, Ph.D., of Cedarburg Wisconsin, passed away on May 15th, 2023, at the Aurora Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin with her family by her side. She was born on July 20th, 1954, in Seoul, South Korea, and later moved to the United States in the autumn of 1977 to continue her education.
Sook-Hui received her Bachelor of Science from Seoul National University in Korea, and her Master of Science from Clarkson University in New York, both in chemistry. She continued her studies at the University of Virginia, where she received a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry in the summer of 1983 under Professor Bruce Martin. Her postdoctoral research led her to the University of Chicago, where she worked under Professor Jack Halpern. She met her future husband, Glen A. Peterson, there. They were married in Tacoma, Washington at Saint Paul's United Methodist Church on September 21, 1985.
Following her postdoctoral work in Chicago, Sook-Hui held research positions at Loyola University Chicago, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She also worked as a freelance document translator. She then established a custom chemical firm in 1997, named Hestia Laboratories Inc., located in New Berlin, Wisconsin. Hestia Laboratories provided chemical synthesis services to pharmaceutical, biotech, medical, and chemical industries and is one of the few woman-founded and owned chemical small businesses. Sook-Hui's husband joined the firm later, and together they ran the company until her passing.
Sook-Hui was a loving wife, mother, aunt and sister. Her role as a mother to her son Alexander A. Peterson, born April 1994, was her life's greatest purpose and reward. Alexander also studied in the field of chemistry, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a Bachelor of Science in May 2016, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2022.
Sook-Hui is survived by her husband, Glen A. Peterson of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; son, Alexander A. Peterson of San Diego, California; brother, Jason Kim of Virginia and sister-in-law, Bok-Sung Kim, both of Virginia; sister-in-law, Young-ja Kim of Maryland; two sisters, Young-Hui Kim and Myong-Hui Kim, both of Seoul, Korea; brother, Sang-Bum Kim of Seoul, Korea; nieces Dyane Bronson of Virginia, and Sunny Kim-Dubois of Maryland; nephews George and Thomas Kim of Maryland.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chang-Hwan Kim and Duk-Soon Chun, both of The Republic of Korea, and her brother Henry Sang-tai Kim, of Maryland.
