Obituary

Mequon, WI – Scott Holden Engroff Sr., a beloved, devoted, and fiercely proud father, grandfather, mentor, and lifelong competitor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born on December 7, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Scott was raised alongside his older brother Johnny and younger sister Jill by his parents, John and Adelaid (Kepler). The son of a steel mill worker, Scott grew up learning the value of hard work early, spending summers at the steel mill and gaining the work ethic and discipline that would define the rest of his life. Those lessons stayed with him forever—nothing worthwhile came without effort, and quitting was never an option.

Scott attended Shady Side Academy High School before heading west to MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. There, his competitive spirit flourished. A true all-around athlete, Scott competed in four sports—wrestling, soccer, golf, and baseball—setting the tone for a lifetime spent pushing himself and those around him to be better.

After earning his bachelor’s degree, Scott attended the University of Michigan Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1967. He then joined the Milwaukee law firm of Michael Best & Friedrich, where he built an extraordinary career spanning more than 50 years. Specializing in Employee Benefit and Pension law, Scott represented trustees managing pension funds for skilled laborers including carpenters, bricklayers, and other unionized workers. He was widely respected for his deep knowledge of the law, unmatched work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his clients. Scott took great pride in advocating for working men and women, and he never forgot where he came from.

While at MacMurray, Scott met the love of his life, Joy Duquette. They were married on June 15, 1963. Together for the next 50+ years, they built a family rooted in unconditional tough love, accountability, resilience, and mental toughness. Scott and Joy raised three children (Melissa, Scott, Jr. and Michael), creating a home filled with high expectations, fierce loyalty, and an understanding that showing up for family always came first. Scott was deeply proud of his family and profoundly protective of them—if you needed him, he was there, no questions asked and no effort spared. That same generosity and willingness to help extended to friends, colleagues, and anyone fortunate enough to be in his extended network.

In addition to his family and legal career, Scott poured his heart into another lifelong passion: soccer. In 1985, he founded the Mequon Soccer Club, which he served as President until 2013. What began as a vision grew into one of Wisconsin’s premier youth soccer programs. In 1990, Scott helped secure land for what became the 16‑acre Mequon Soccer Park—an achievement he was immensely proud of. Over the next 35 years, the club produced state championships at every level, developed Wisconsin high school All-Americans, prepared hundreds of athletes for collegiate competition, and helped many players advance to professional soccer careers. More importantly, Scott’s impact reached thousands of players, coaches, and families, shaping lives through discipline, teamwork, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

When he wasn’t working, coaching, or cheering from the sidelines, Scott loved being outdoors—especially long walks with his dog Duffy, traveling to Telluride, Colorado, and finding any excuse to compete. A lifelong athlete, he never lost his love for soccer, skiing, golf, racquetball, hiking, or simply testing himself against the next challenge.

Scott will be remembered as a man of integrity, intensity, loyalty, and heart. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched—as a father, grandfather, coach, mentor, and friend.

Scott is survived by his sister Jill (Bill) Petraitis; his children Missy (Tim McLeod) Engroff, Scott (Tina) Engroff, and Mike Engroff; and his grandchildren Jourdyn, Ciana, Griffin, Brayden, Holden, Savanna, Ella, and James Engroff.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Johnny, and his beloved wife Joy.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon on Friday, May 8, from 4:00–8:00 p.m.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Story Point Memory Care of Mequon for the compassion, care, and support they provided to Scott and his family.
