Salvatore "Sam" Marchese, age 90 years of Port Washington passed away at his residence on Monday, October 3, 2016. He was born August 16, 1926 in Milwaukee, son of Anthony and Agatha (nee Busalacchi) Marchese. Sam was a WW II Navy veteran. On March 1, 1949, he married Laverne Kroll at St. Mary's Church in Port Washington. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1988. On March 30, 1990, Sam married Mary Krier in Port Washington. Being a man of many hats, Sam was a truck driver, hauling fly ash from the power plant for the A. Marchese Company, was a bulldozer operator, started "Sam's Pizza" -the first pizza restaurant in Port Washington (now The Pasta Shoppe), operated the Columbia Bar & Grill and the American Legion Bar, tended bar at the D & G Club and the Pasta Shoppe, and cut grass for Ozaukee County Park System after retiring. He enjoyed cooking, tending to his yard, auto racing and was on the fire crew at the Milwaukee Mile. He was an avid coin collector and was well known as a jokester. Sam was a member of Van Ells- Schanen Post 82 American Legion, VFW Post 5373, Moose Lodge 1043, and USS Lindenwald LSD 6 group. Survivors include his wife Mary, daughter Carla (John) Krostag of Oostburg, grandson Anthony (Kristin) Krostag of Sheboygan Falls, 2 great grandchildren Sophia and Aryanna Krostag, brother Joseph (Arlene) Marchese of St. Francis, sisters Antoinette (Keith) Powell of Appleton and Mary Beth Marchese of Green Bay. Also surviving are brothers- and sisters-in-law Theresa (the late Louis) Marchese of Milwaukee, Shirley (the late Richard) Krier of Cedarburg, Susan (the late Jim) Krier of Town of Belgium, Dennis (Mary) Krier of Port Washington, Robert (Sharon) Kroll of Sheboygan, Donald (the late Sharon) Kroll of Cedar Grove, Mary Jo (Jim) Schinker of Elkhart Lake, Ruth (the late Peter) Keller of Port Washington, June (the late Max) Kroll of Monroe. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and many friends. Sam was preceded in death by his first wife Laverne, his brother Louis Marchese, sisters Tana (the late George) Weggen and Florence (the late Alfred Busch and the late John Winnemuller) Busch, sisters-in-law Dorothy (the late Francis) Lorenz, Eleanor (the late Harold) Eder, Carol (the late Oliver) Schueller and Phyllis Krier and brothers-in-law Kenneth and Tommy Krier. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:30PM on Thursday, October 6, at St. John XXIII Parish – St. Peter of Alcantara Church, 1800 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will preside. Military Honors will follow the service. Sam will be laid to rest in St. Mary Mausoleum the following day. The family will receive visitors at the CHURCH on Thursday from 3:30-6:15PM. Memorials are suggested in Sam's name to the Stars & Stripes Honor Flight.
