Mr. Ross Balsom of Random Lake passed away at Lawlis Family Hospice Center in Mequon early Tuesday morning, October 23, 2018, following a stroke. He was 80 years old.
Ross was born in Milwaukee on September 29, 1938, son of Rudolph and Catherine Webbere Balsom. He attended local schools and graduated from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, Class of 1956. In high school, Ross liked to play basketball, baseball and run.
On September 12, 1964, Ross was united in marriage with Patricia Hanel in Milwaukee. The couple lived in Wauwatosa and Elm Grove before moving to a home they built on Random Lake in 1990. Mr. Balsom worked as a vehicle mechanic for the US Postal Service, working out of the main post office in Milwaukee and serving vehicles from all over southern Wisconsin. For a short while, he and Pat owned and operated RPM Automotive in Milwaukee. Ross enjoyed hunting and fishing, even when he was young. His parents had a fishing camp on Washington Island, and it instilled a love of the sport in Ross that he enjoyed sharing with others. He encouraged his granddaughter Katie to join him, and they could often be seen fishing off the pier at the house in Random Lake or hunting turkeys or deer at a family farm in Door County. On Wednesdays, Ross could usually be found playing sheepshead with the gang at Random Lake Library.
Survivors include his loving wife Pat, of Random Lake, and granddaughter Katie Arhelger, also of Random Lake, brother Bruce (Barbara) Balsom of Maryland, sisters Lori Fredericks of Florida and Kathleen (Lee) Petrina of Algoma. He is further survived by other family and many friends. Ross is preceded in death by his parents as well as his dear daughter Michele and her husband Daniel Arhelger.
