Robert Schmitz, of Saukville, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at his residence. He was 87 years old.
Bob was born in West Bend on May 20, 1932, son of William Schmitz and Olive Berres Schmitz. He grew up and attended school in the Saukville area. On May 17, 1952 he married Dolores Schowalter at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Saukville. She preceded him in death in 2018.
Mr. Schmitz honorably served his country in the Army National Guard from 1951-1954.
Robert drove truck delivering milk for Wilke Dairy for 42 years, retiring in 1992. He delivered to many area stores and restaurants. He was a member of St. John XXIII Parish (Immaculate Conception) Parish in Saukville, and a longtime member of the Saukville Fire Department, along with his father, his brother, and his two sons. In his retirement, Bob worked for the Village of Saukville at their Recycling Center. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, doing yard work, socializing with friends and family, and was active in his church community. The most important people in his life were his family.
Survivors include children Gerald "Jerry" (Carlene) Schmitz and Catherine Berend, both of West Bend. He is further survived by 7 grandchildren: Amy, Kevin, Jessica, Stephen, Keith, Jennifer and Christopher, 7 great-grandchildren, his son-in-law Jim Berend, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Dolores, son Dennis A. Schmitz, one brother Arthur (the late Marcella) Schmitz, and sister Cecilia (the late Fred) Schueller.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at 6:00 PM at St. John XXIII Parish, Immaculate Conception Church in Saukville. Father Patrick Wendt will preside over the Mass. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Saukville. A visitation will take place at the CHURCH on Thursday the 31st from 4-6 PM.
