He treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and the memories they created together.
Richard Steidtmann, of the Town of Port Washington, passed away in the morning hours of Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Samaritan Nursing Home in West Bend. He was 91 years old.
Richard was born on June 25, 1935, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where he spent his childhood years building memories with his parents and siblings until entering the Army in 1958. Shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life, Mary Lou Schenk. They married on April 4, 1959, in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, eventually finding their way back to Wisconsin and raising their family on Northwoods Road in the Town of Port Washington.
Family was at the center of Richard's life. He loved being there to support his kids in their sports, cheering them on from the sidelines and celebrating their accomplishments, big and small. As a grandpa, he treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and the memories they created together.
Richard was extremely proud of his craft, spending the majority of his career as a plasterer for Niederkorn Plastering. After “retirement”, he began working side by side with his son Steve at S&S Construction. Throughout his entire life, he loved to point out old job sites and share stories of some workplace shenanigans.
He had a special way of making people smile, whether through his quick wit, a funny story, or his contagious laugh. His humor and easygoing spirit brought joy to those around him, and his presence made ordinary moments feel special.
Richard also loved the outdoors, camping, and traveling. Some of his most cherished memories were made exploring new places and enjoying adventures with his beloved wife. They loved to dance and could often be found twirling around the dance floor together. Those shared experiences and the life they built together will forever hold a special place in the hearts of their family.
Richard is survived by his four children: Glenda (John) Jacque, Steve (Patti) Steidtmann, Allan (Josie) Steidtmann and Mike (Jenny) Steidtmann; his grandchildren Jenny Schurrer, Chris Wach, Michelle Joyce, Cassie Tartaglia, Jessica Steidtmann, Jessica Mikyska, and Kaitlyn Steidtmann; and his is greatgrandchildren Noah, Cadence, Olivia, Aiden, Phoenix, Zilah and Valerie. He is further survived by his siblings Gerald, Bob and Mark Steidtmann, and Karen Mangino, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; daughter, Deborah Schmidt; Sister, Joan Haag; and brother, Bill Steidtmann.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Richard’s life on Friday, October 23, 2026, from 3-5 PM, at the Van Ells – Schanen American Legion Hall, 435 Lake St., Port Washington.
He will be laid to rest next to his wife Mary at St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Port Washington.
Richard was a devoted husband, a loving dad, a proud grandpa, and a friend to many. His shoes will be hard to fill, his laugh will never be forgotten, and he will always hold a special place in our hearts.
