Richard "Dick" Peter Jacobs September 4, 1934 – November 13, 2024 Richard "Dick" Peter Jacobs of Grafton passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on the evening of Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the age of 90. Born in Milwaukee to Edmund and Gertrude (Bahringer) Jacobs on September 4, 1934, Dick led a life rich with love, kindness, and purpose. On July 13, 1956, Dick married the love of his life, Joan Lustick, and together they raised four wonderful children.
A proud graduate of Cedarburg High School (Class of 1952), Dick went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force. Following his service, he earned a degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and dedicated 31 years to teaching Earth Science and Physics at Grafton High School. Though he had opportunities to move into school district administration, he chose to remain in the classroom, mentoring countless young teachers and inspiring generations of students. During three summers, Dick and his family embarked on adventures in Utah, Colorado, and Montana, where he attended the National Defense Education Act's Teacher Training Institutes. These experiences fueled his passion for the natural world, leading him to explore geological sites during long drives through the mountains. A talented photographer, Dick was rarely seen without his camera bag. His love of nature photography culminated in co-founding JLM Visuals, a business that specialized in natural science photos for schools, universities and textbook publishers. In their later years, Dick and Joan made full use of their Senior National Park passes, traveling extensively across the United States. Winters were often spent with family and friends on Marco Island, Florida, where Dick took great joy in giving visitors tours of the Everglades. Dick cherished his role as a grandfather. He spent countless hours walking babies through the house, delighting them with the chimes of various clocks. As his grandchildren grew, he was always available, whether in person or by phone, to assist with their science homework. Above all, Dick was defined by his intelligence, humor, and boundless kindness. He derived immense joy from seeing his loved ones happy and thriving, and he will long be remembered for the love he so freely gave. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Park Trust (http://www.parktrust.org).
