Obituary for William M. Klas

Mr. Bill Klas, of State Road 57 in the Town of Fredonia, passed away at his residence early Wednesday, December 28, 2016, while surrounded by his loving family. He was 84 years old. Bill was born on the family homestead on February 13, 1932, son of John and Martha Gasper Klas. He attended local schools before attending St. Francis Minor Seminary, graduating in 1951. Bill proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War as an infantryman and a communications lineman. On May 21, 1955 he was united in marriage with Laurene Watry at St. Mary Catholic Church, Lake Church. They settled in Fredonia and started their family, later moving to Cascade in 1985. Mr. Klas worked at Gilson Brothers in Fredonia, later Construction Forms in Grafton, retiring as foreman of the machine shop in 1997. Bill and Laurene moved back to the Fredonia area in 2015. He was a member of Divine Savior Parish, American Legion Post 410, VFW Post 5373, Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Random Lake Rod & Gun Club, where he enjoyed shooting trap. Bill loved shooting darts, was an avid fisherman, a phenomenal grandpa and a wonderful family man. He was well known for his great sense of humor.
Mr. Klas is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laurene, and their four children: Darlene (Ted) Klockow of Random Lake, Dr. Paul (Karen) Klas of La Crosse, Mary Jo “Mickie” (Wayne) Schueller of Dacada and Rev. Duane (Liz) Klas of Cedar Springs, MI. He is further survived by 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren (with one more soon-to-arrive), five sisters: Sr. Joannes Klas of Guatemala, Lois (the late Bill) Lawton of Mauston, Roseann (Tom) Watry of Cecil, Laura (Walter) Weyker of Fredonia, and Verna (Robert) Leider of Random Lake, two brothers: Ivan (Louise) Klas of Fredonia and Peter (Sue) Klas of Belgium, sisters-in-law Jeannie Klas of Fredonia and Jean Klas of Grafton, nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter Linda Laura, sister Patricia (the late Dale) Croatt and brothers Robert and John Klas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6PM on Thursday, January 5th at Divine Savior – Holy Cross Chapel, 5332 Hwy B, Belgium. Father Richard Cerpich will preside. He will be laid to rest the following day with military honors at St. Rose Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the CHURCH on Thursday from 2-5:45PM, with military walk-throughs at 5PM.
