Military Service:

January 9, 1951, Norb, along with 44 other young men, left Sheboygan for the Milwaukee induction station for their physical and to begin Army Service under the Selective Service Act. His rank was Pvt. E1. He then boarded a train bound for Ft. Sheridan, IL, where they were issued their uniform. They stayed for several days receiving orientation on the disciplined routine of Army life, then left by train bound for Camp Polk, LA. Upon arrival they joined other draftees and enlistees in the 45th Infantry Division (a part of the Oklahoma National Guard). The 45th is called the Thunderbird Division identified by a shoulder patch with a yellow bird, wings outstretched, on a red background. He was attached to the 179th battalion, Company F. While at Camp Polk they were instructed in basic and combat training. Norb served under 1st Sergeant Dan (Hoss) Blocker.

May, 1951, He advanced to Pvt. 1st Class and was sent to Camp Stoneman, a United States Army Military facility located in Pittsburg, California, and then on to San Francisco where he boarded the General A. W. Brewster - sailing for Japan. Their call was to initially go as an individual combat team but soon it was decided they would join up with the 45th in Hokkaido, Japan. In Japan they were instructed in advance training.

December 24, 1951, they were moved to the front lines in Korea. A true no-man's land, he braved the frigid cold while watching for the enemy.

May 6-7, 1952, while on patrol at Chorwon Valley, North Korea, they encountered and were overrun by the enemy. He received a perforating wound to the maxillary sinus and lay in a rice paddy until he could be evacuated (approximately 5 hours) ultimately being hospitalized at Tokyo Army Hospital. For his service he received the Purple Heart and the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Camp Star.

July, 1952, he was shipped to Camp McCoy, WI. While home for only 3 days, he became deathly ill and had to return to Camp McCoy Hospital where he would spend the next 5 months slowly recovering. November 15, 1952, he left the hospital and was honorably discharged.

In 1956 - he joined the American Legion holding various positions including County Commander (for three consecutive years).

In 1961 – he joined the 40 et 8, Voiture 1080, holding positions of Correspondent, Chef de Gare and 2nd District Grand Cheminot.  In Grand de Wisconsin, he served with the Grand Color Guard, held the positions of Grand Commis Voyageur, Grand Guard de La Porte, Grand Conducteur and Grand Chef de Train.

In 1978 – he served as the Grand Chef de Gare.

Norb was honored to be a member of the American Legion and the 40 et 8, organizations for veterans of the United States armed forces. Over the years he had been a loyal and faithful member.

In October 2022 Norbert visited Washington DC on the "Honor Flight", accompanied by son-in-law Robert Luce, as guardian.

Norb thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren. Whether it was teaching them safety in his woodworking shop or shooting the breeze with them, the daughter he talked to next would surely hear all about this grand kid's happenings.   He had a love of woodworking and took pride in having made gavels for Locale Chef's and many Grand Chef's.  Another source of great pride was in 2021 when Oostburg High School presented him with an honorary high school diploma. Norb put his family and country first which meant he missed out on graduating from high school with the class of 1946.

Norb was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Random Lake where he served many years on the cemetery committee.

The Family would like to thank the Sarah Richardson staff and the Pine Haven Staff for the kindness and care they provided. Also, the Milwaukee VA Hospital for their outstanding care.

Norb would say "God Bless the USA and the Freedom we enjoy".

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 98 Random Lake Rd, Random Lake, WI 53075.   Norb will be laid to rest just prior to the service at 10 am on Saturday at Union Cemetery, Random Lake, with full military honors.
