Monica E. Schmitz, age 93, entered into eternal life on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
She was born on October 7, 1932, in Newburg, Wisconsin to parents Alois and Josephine (nee Michels) Weiland. Monica attended Port Washington High School and graduated in 1950. She was united in marriage with Cyril Schmitz on June 11, 1955, in Lake Church, Wisconsin and together they raised six children. Monica worked in the offices of Dr. Dorr in Belgium and Dr. Jensen in Cedar Grove. She then worked as a teller at Port Washington State Bank in Belgium for 20+ years.
Monica was a member of St. Mary’s Lake Church/Divine Savior Parish and Christian Mothers.
Monica enjoyed bowling, going to the casino, and birdwatching. She was an avid spectator at her grandchildren’s sporting events. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Monica is survived by her children Sharon Schmitz (Tom) of Texas, Mark Schmitz of Connecticut, Patrick Schmitz (Sara) of Nevada, Gary Schmitz (Cathy) of Texas, David Schmitz of Arizona, Jill Bares (Tony) of Wisconsin. She is further survived by her grandchildren Megan, Gregory, Erica, Addison, Garrett, Andria, Ryan, Simon, Delaney, and Ryan, great-grandchildren Naomi, Noah, Josephine, James III, Ethan and Ginny. She is also survived by her sister Joann Anzia of Colorado, sister-in-law Evelyn Walber, brother-in-law John Schmitz, and other relatives and friends.
Monica was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cyril Schmitz, brother James Weiland, and grandchild Tyler.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 12 Noon to 2PM at Eernisse Funeral Home in Belgium (171 N. Royal Ave. Belgium, WI 53004). A service will be held at 10AM the next day, Monday, February 9, 2026, at Eernisse Funeral Home in Belgium. Parish Director Deb Hamm will be officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at St. Mary’s Lake Church Cemetery in Lake Church, Wisconsin.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers and staff at Harbor Club and the nurses from Preceptor Hospice for their care and compassion.
