Obituary

Mr. Mel Hubing, of Elm Street in Belgium, passed away at his home Tuesday morning, February 9, 2016, while surrounded by his loving family. He was 85 years old. Mel was born in the Town of Belgium on September 15, 1930, son of John and Sylvina Rach Hubing. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. On August 19, 1972, Mel was united in marriage with Sandra Bergeson at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake Church. He worked as Service Manager for Flaherty Automotive in Port Washington before retiring from Bolen's Manufacturing in Port Washington. Mr. Hubing was a member of Divine Savior Catholic Church, a longtime member of the Belgium Fire Department, Belgium American Legion Post 412, VFW Post 5373, the Order of Catholic Knights and IAMAW Local 1430. Mel loved the community he lived in; he was one of the first EMT's in Belgium, frequently sold raffle tickets for groups in the area (whether he was a member or not) and was always very active around town. After retirement he enjoyed spending time in Lake Church, often taking care of the school and church properties and fixing any small problem that may arise. He was also a regular AM coffee drinker at Hobo's, and could be counted on for the latest town information, joke of the day and a raffle ticket. He is survived by his wife Sandy of Belgium, son Jon Hubing, also of Belgium, daughter Beverly Hubing of Port Washington, brothers Norbert (the late Esther) Hubing and Gerald (Arline) Hubing, both of Belgium. He is also survived by sisters Gertrude (the late Ed) Fieber of Port Washington, Kathleen (the late Ken) Bares of Belgium and Mary (the late Gene) Bares of Holy Cross, sister-in-law Eleanor Hubing of Iowa City, IA, and brothers-in-law Bernard (Sylvia) Bergeson of Saukville and Todd Brunkow of Eau Claire. Mel is further survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and –nephews, other family members and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by brothers Donald (the late Harriet), Emil (the late Camellia), Robert (the late Lucille), Joe and John (the late Elaine) Hubing, sisters Genrose (the late Alex) Brabender, Agnes (the late Frank) Bahr and Regina (the late Fred) Augustin and brother-in-law Dale Bergeson. Funeral Services will be held at 4:30PM on Saturday, February 13th at the Eernisse Funeral Home in Belgium. Father Jim Ernster will preside. Military Honors will follow the service. The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home on Saturday from 12:30-4:30 PM. There will be walk-throughs for the Belgium Fire Department, American Legion and VFW scheduled, beginning at 1:30PM. If desired, memorials are suggested to Belgium American Legion Post 412, Belgium Lions or the Belgium Fire & Rescue. Online condolences may be left at www.eernissefuneralhome.com .
