Obituary

Melvin Buchholz, of Cedar Grove, formerly of Port Washington, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at his Long Lake home. He was 67 years old. Mel was born in Milwaukee on December 13, 1953, son of Melvin H. Buchholz and Joyce Wettengel Buchholz. He grew up in Oak Creek, graduating from Oak Creek High School with the class of 1972. After high school, Mel served his country in the United States Navy, being honorably discharged in 1974. On June 22, 1974, he married the love of his life, Wendy Lemke at Zion Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. The couple moved to Port Washington in 1983 after Mel accepted a Deputy Sheriff position with the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Department, retiring in 2012. He also owned and operated Mel's Field of Dreams sports card shop in Port Washington for 16 years. After he retired from the sheriff's department, he worked at KMC Stamping in Port Washington driving a straight truck. Mel loved playing horseshoes, playing at Filmore Horseshoe Club. He also enjoyed playing baseball and coaching his grandsons' little league teams. Mel loved spending time at the family's "happy place" on Long Lake and enjoyed socializing with his many friends. On Wednesday nights, he could often be found at Benson's Holiday Hideaway on Long Lake playing sheepshead. Mel also loved riding his motorcycle, and he and Wendy took many road trips. Mel is survived by his wife of 47 years Wendy of Cedar Grove, his loving daughter Lisa Buchholz of Plymouth and his two dear grandsons Jacob and Colin. He is further survived by two brothers and his mother-in-law Darlene Lemke of South Milwaukee, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents. Visitation for Mel will take place on Tuesday, October 26th from 4-7 PM at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 7 PM, followed by military honors. Pastor Stephen Harris will preside over the service.
