Obituary

Surrounded in love, in the presence of his family, Louie made the final journey home on June 14, 2018, at the age of 84. With his strong faith to guide him, Louie was reunited with Carole, the love of his life. Louie and Carole met as teenagers and were married in 1955, married for 61 years at the time of her death in 2017. Their marriage was an example of love and devotion to their daughters- Tina and Cindy, and their grandchildren- Justin, Mike, Steve and Rosie. Louie was a quiet man, gentle and humble. He was a good listener and gave welcome advice to his family. He had an unexpected sense of humor. Louie and Carole took their girls on educational and fun family vacations. He also spent time with just the girls. He cooked lunch for them during their grade school years. While their mom was working on Saturdays, he took them on picnics to Mauthe Lake, where he taught them to swim. His next challenge was teaching them to drive. He enjoyed his grandchildren and treasured his time with them-participating in school functions, watching sporting events, babysitting, and playing games with them. He spent time with each of them whether it was going to the races with Justin, acting as a Confirmation Sponsor to Mike, taking Stevie to baseball practice and the park after, or participating in a Girl Scout ceremony for Rosie. His devotion to his wife never wavered. This was especially evident by his constant care for her after dementia changed her life as he kept her with him in their home for as long as possible. His unconditional love for Carole set an example for his family as well as others who admired his gentle and loving care for her. Louie's last 2 ½ years were spent at the Harrison Home where he discovered new friends, interests, and talents, including painting, planting, baking, word games and crafts. Louie was a quiet source of strength and a reliable pillar of our family. We will miss our Dad, our "Papa." Louie is survived by his daughters Tina (Rick) Makinen and Cindy (Steve) Petrie and grandchildren Justin (Marcella) Makinen, Mike Petrie, Steve Petrie and Rosie (Jacob) Sheets. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30
