IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Loren A.
Liddell Iii
April 6, 1945 – March 16, 2024
Loren Allen Liddell III was born into eternal life at home in hospice care with family at his side on Saturday, March 16, 2024. Loren was born in Manitowoc to Loren Jr. and Emma (Wagner) Liddell on April 6, 1945.
Loren graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. He went on to college at Manitowoc County Teacher's College and then to UW Steven's Point here he received his bachelor's degree in education. Loren then went on to complete a master's degree in AV from Stout University and then a second master's at UW Milwaukee.
Loren was a teacher at John Long Middle School in Grafton for 25 years. His focus was both Math and IT. Loren creatively engaged his students daily, ensuring they not only learned the material but also understood how what they learned would be applied in daily life. He supported his students as the leader of numerous extra-curricular activities, such as chess, model rockets, AV and information technology teams. He ensured that John Long Middle School in Grafton was the first school in the state of Wisconsin to have a full computer lab with the first generation of Radio Shack TRS80 personal computers. Loren's leadership and commitment to IT advancements was so profound that many of his former students went on to work in Silicon Valley with the greatest minds and technology visionaries of our time. Loren had numerous students keep in touch with him even after they finished college and went on to work for Microsoft's, Bill Gates and Apple's, Steve Jobs.
Loren was well loved by the Grafton school district's faculty and staff. His former pupils would often tell both Kathy (wife) and Alice (daughter) many years later that they looked forward to Mr. Liddell's class as the highlight of their day. Loren's commitment was to not only the gifted IT and Math students but also to the ones who were struggling to find their purpose as well. Mr. Liddell always found a way to highlight and identify each person's strengths and taught them to focus on developing that. Loren always said, we all have strengths and weaknesses, work on developing your individual strengths and minimizing your weaknesses and you will succeed.
Loren's approach in life, as in teaching, was open minded with a generous heart. He was always helpful and had a great visionary mindset. Loren was consistently driven by wanting each person he met in life to become the very best version of themselves they could achieve.
Loren had many interests. He loved fishing at his lake home on Lake Wobegon. Loren loved listening to Garrison Keillor, Harry Chapin, and Pink Floyd. He was an active gardener and often shared his harvest of raspberries and vegetables with others. Loren was a 4-H leader for photography and held an advanced license in ham radio. His call letter was WD9AUP and is now a silent key.
Loren loved raising fish and had an in-ground koi pond that multiplied over the years giving life to 100s of huge Koi fish.
Loren touched the lives of so many people with his brilliant wit and timeless charm in every situation. While he lived a very full life, his absence will be a felt by many for years to come. Loren's energy and spirit will go on forever in the lives of the people he helped.
Loren's memory will remain in the hearts of his loving wife Katherine of 58 years of marriage, his cherished daughter Alice (His Girlie) and son-in-law Steve Wise of West Bend. He will forever be adored by his loving grandchildren Anika and Niko Wise; his beloved sister Judy and brother-in-law Gene Buesing. His beloved Niece Karen Buesing (Kevin) Flynn and Nephew Kevin (Alona) Buesing. Loren is also survived by Minna Liddell, dear half-sister Carol (Paul) Schuette; and beloved nephews Dan (wife Jen) Tagen and Jesse Tagen. He is further survived by his half brother David (Greta) Liddell; sister-in-law Janet (Dick) Grochowski; brother-in-law Bob Kortens; nephews Ken Kortens, Peter Sotos, Mark Kortens, Jed, Josh and Jake Kortens and Eric Grochowski; nieces Jenna Kortens, Kari Gustafson, and Emily Grochowski.
