Obituary

Lloyd Smith passed away peacefully Friday, September 11, 2020. He was 88 years old. Lloyd was born November 10, 1931 to Lester and Florence Mehring Smith. He graduated from Port Washington High School in 1949 and earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Government from Beloit College in 1953 and in hotel and restaurant management from Michigan State University in 1955. On December 27, 1958, he married Antonia "Toni" Smith at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stockbridge. Lloyd managed Smith Bros. Fish Shanty restaurant, retiring in 1988. He and Toni then bought the Harborside Motor Inn and managed that until it was sold in 1998. The couple travelled extensively, especially after their retirements, until Toni's death in 2009. In 2015, Lloyd moved to Cedar Communities in West Bend, where he resided until his death. Lloyd was active in several restaurant and local organizations. As a young man, he was a Boy Scout leader and a Dad Advisor of DeMolay. In later years, he was President of the Food Service Executives and a board member of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, the Portal Workshop, and the Southeast Wisconsin Tourism Council. Lloyd was a charter member of the Ozaukee and Port Washington Tourism Councils. He was President of the Port Chamber of Commerce and the Fish Day committee. He was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church. Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ann (Doug) of Maryland, his son David (Judy) of Virginia, and two grandsons, Jake and Matt. He is further survived by his sisters-in-law, Gertrude Behnke of Brillion and Esther (Norman) Boyle of Iowa, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by many friends, including two who helped him considerably in his later years, Myra Deppiesse (his "adopted" sister) and Rick Smith. The family greatly appreciates the decades of extraordinary care to both Lloyd and Toni by Dr. Scot Wilfong. In addition to his wife, Lloyd was preceded in death by his sister Carol Boettcher, brother Alan Smith, sister-in-law Elizabeth (Birdie) Smith, and brothers-in-law Carl Boettcher, George Sevenich, and Kenneth Behnke. A celebration of Lloyd's life will be held next year. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Portal, Inc., the Port Washington Historical Society, Interfaith Caregivers of Washington County, or Cedar Community Foundation. The Eernisse Funeral Home of Port Washington is assisting the family with arrangements. On-line condolences may be left at www.eernissefuneralhome.com
