John Carl Weiss of Port Washington passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the age of 80. He was born in Sparta, WI to Carl and Mernie (nee Day) Weiss on June 16, 1938. John was united in marriage to Mary Jane Jannsen in Caledonia, MN on June 26, 1965 and together they had four children.
John was a 1956 graduate of Tomah High School in Tomah, WI. He graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in economics. He was in Naval ROTC at UW for two years and finished his military obligation in the United States Army. After college he worked at Gimbels Department Store in Milwaukee. Leaving Gimbels, he went to work for Taylor Electric Corp. in Mequon. His travels for Taylor included Port Washington and he and Mary Jane moved there in 1968. He ended up working for Bolen Corp. for nineteen years. After Bolens' closed he worked as a financial advisor and paralegal.
He was a former member of the Port Washington Jaycees. Hobbies included bowling, fishing, playing cards, especially sheepshead and bridge. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and working on his computer. Later in life he took some art lessons and found he had a talent for painting. John also did a lot of traveling with his wife over the years. He was an avid Badger and Packer fan. He enjoyed his seven grandchildren very much and followed all their activities closely.
John is survived by his wife Mary Jane, his children, Jeffrey (Gladys) Weiss, Monica (Joe Hodkiewicz) Weiss, and Paul (Paula) Weiss; grandchildren, Maggie, Ben, Sophie, Kieran, Samantha, Cayley and Alexis; siblings, Maxine (Michael) Keppler, Roger (Diane) Weiss, and Carol Baumgarten. He is further survived by numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son Richard Weiss and his parents and his parents-in-law, John and Mary Jannsen.
A Funeral Service will be held at 6:00Pm on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church (701 Washington St. Grafton, WI 53024) with Rev. Luke Anderson presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 4:00PM until the time of service. John will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Washington.
