Obituary

John Petzkow, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at his home in the Town of Cedarburg. Known for his life-long love for fishing, he was often referred to as "John the Guide" and affectionately called "The Mayor" by his neighbors, living a life full of adventure, mentorship, and cherished stories that will be remembered for generations.

John was united in marriage with Dianne Ellmann on July 11, 1959. The couple started their family in Milwaukee and moved to Cedarburg in 1972. Mr. Petzkow worked as a lithographer for Inland Press for almost 50 years, retiring in 1994. He was known as the "Vince Lombardi of the Press Room," being an excellent role model for many of his co-workers and earning respect for his leadership and guidance. His influence extended beyond the workplace, shaping lives with wisdom and encouragement.

John's passion for the outdoors was unmatched. He loved fishing in Northern Wisconsin with family and friends, often serving as a mentor and guide on countless trips. His kitchen table was the heart of his home- a place where all his fishing tales, hunting adventures, and stories from the Army flowed freely. A proud U.S. Army Veteran, John served in Germany as a skilled Sharpshooter. During his time of service, John met his life-long fishing buddy, Tom, whom he spent countless days on the Great Lakes with. He took great pride in displaying mounts of his trophy Muskies and the Largemouth Bass that adorn his family room walls, perfectly encapsulating his remarkable skill and love for the sport. John had also spent many years out West hunting with his friends, bringing home more trophies that added to his family's memories.

When John was indoors, he enjoyed spending time with his dog, Bindi, while watching classic Westerns. He never got tired of the tales of rugged heroes and open plains.

This past Summer, John's neighborhood surprised him with a 90th birthday celebration, reflecting on the old days and the friendships he had built in his community. He was a knowledgeable man who knew the ins and outs of the neighborhood. He was wonderful with children, who loved visiting him for his warm presence and captivating stories.

Survivors include his wife Dianne Petzkow, children Joseph (Lori) Petzkow of Cedarburg, and Kathi (Scott) Porath of Friendship, grandchildren Matthew (Caryn) Van Pietersom and Andrew (Phanhia) Van Pietersom, and four great-grandchildren: Emily, Olivia, Ethan, and Nate. He is further survived by brother Tom (the late Marilyn) Petzkow of Lake Tomahawk and sister Margaret (the late Richard) Schroeder of Hartland, nieces, nephews, other family, friends and neighbors. John is preceded in death by his parents John and Margaret Petzkow.

As John's health began to decline, he was surrounded by incredible care and support. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to all who offered kindness and assistance during this time- you made a difficult journey easier with your compassion.

John's legacy is one of love, mentorship, and adventure. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who have had the privilege of sharing a story at his kitchen table.
