On the evening of May 21, 2016, the gentle voice of Jerome "Jerry" Smaglik died at Lawlis Family Hospice, Columbia-St. Mary's Ozaukee Hospital. Complications of Parkinson's disease had overwhelmed his courageous, 30 year battle with PD. He was 79 years old.
Formerly of Wauwatosa, Smaglik was a long-time resident of the Town of Port Washington. After retiring from Allstate Insurance Company. As a career sales agent, Smaglik's creative interest in fine art photography was re-ignited – a fire that had been lit when he was a young student of Art. His revitalized effort resulted in satisfying sales at galleries and art fairs, fulfilling a goal and closing a circle begun 50 years earlier.
Not one to let the world of cyber technology pass him by, Smaglik joined the MAC computer group "Double Click", meeting monthly at UWM. "An old dog learning new tricks, or trying to learn," he'd say with a chuckle.
A keen interest in woodworking, inherited he said, from his master-carpenter father, inspired Smaglik's joining the Wisconsin Woodworking Guild, creating simple birdhouses as well as complex cabinetry.
Golf outings with his two brothers and their friends were his favorite summertime activity, ending only when advancing PD became too great an obstacle.
He is preceded in death by parents Mansworth and Ceil Smaglik of Milwaukee. He is survived by spouse Carole Smaglik of Port Washington, and daughters Suzanne "Suki" Smaglik (Warren Ulmer) of Lander, WY, and Julie (Richard) Temple of Pearisburg, VA, and by sons Robert (Laurie) of Butte des Morts, WI and John (Eileen) of Sussex, WI, and by their children. He is further survived by brothers Norman (Mary) and Dale (Cathy), both of Milwaukee, and by nieces, nephews and friends.
A family memorial is planned.
