Obituary

James Stenberg, of Cedar Grove, passed away in the evening hours of Sunday, January 29, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was 71 years old.

Jim was born in Traverse City, MI, on November 30, 1951, son of Lloyd and Celia (nee Stallman) Stenberg. Jim grew up in Muskegon, MI, until his family moved to the Port Washington area in the 1960's. He attended Port Washington High School, graduating with the class of 1969. After high school, Jim served his country honorably in the United States Army.

On September 8, 1973, Jim married Peggy Melichar at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in Port Washington. The couple settled in Cedar Grove to raise their family. Jim worked as a steel fabricator at Modern Equipment in Port Washington for 44 years, retiring in 2017. He was a proud member of International Machinists Union Local 1430 and served as a Union Steward for many years.

Jim enjoyed working on vintage cars and motorcycles. He built his own hot rod from the ground up and loved being a grandpa.

Jim is survived by his wife Peggy, his two children Jess (Frank) Vento and Andy Stenberg. He is further survived by his granddaughters Abigail and Sydney Vento, his great-granddaughter Quinn, his mother Celia Stenberg, siblings Tom (Sandy) Stenberg and Kathy Stenberg, brothers and sisters-in-law: Kate Smith, Steve (Barb) Melichar, Ben (Cheryl) Melichar, Grace (Stephen) Prom, Sherri (the late Jim) Melichar, and Tom (Lisa) Melichar, his friends Judd (Deb) Schubert, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his father Lloyd, his brother Dan (the late Diane) Stenberg, in-laws Benjamin and Grace Melichar, and brothers-in-law Danny and Jim Melichar.

Visitation for Jim will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023, from 4-6 PM at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 171 N. Royal Ave., Belgium. A memorial service will follow at 6 PM, with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation.
