Howard "Howie" M. Arndt of Belgium passed away peacefully on April 3, 2018 at the age of 87. He was born in the Town of Fredonia to Marvin and Eleanor (nee Knuth) Arndt on April 11, 1930. He was united in marriage to the late Margaret "Boots" Rassel on July 24, 1954 at St Nicholas Catholic Church in Dacada and together had six children.
In 1953 Howie and his brother-in-law Dean Yoho founded Belgium Trucking. The success of Belgium Trucking led them to open How-Dea Service Center on Highway 57 in June of 1967. In 1986 he purchased and developed property near I-43 to build his travel center. Later Howie and Boots built Hobo's Korner Kitchen in May of 1987.
Howie was a Lions Club member for over 60 years. He was part of the honorary Belgium Fire Department and belonged to the Belgium American Legion Post 412. Howie was a member of St Mark's Lutheran Church for over 10 years. He also served as Belgium Village President from 1963-1974.
Howie and Boots loved to travel during the spring to Arizona. They especially enjoyed going to their cabin in Crivitz, WI. Entertaining family and friends was important to the couple. He had a great sense of humor and many of his jokes and "one-liners" will be told for years to come.
Howie is survived by his children: Sandy (Dean) Townsend of St Louis, John (Deborah) Arndt of Port Washington Sherry (Mark) Mulloy of Belgium Michele (Robert) Bruggink of Cedar Grove and Patrick (Jennifer) Arndt of Belgium; 16 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren and sister, Sylvia Yoho. He is further survived by his sisters-in-law, Katherine and Judy Arndt and special friend Suzie.
He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his daughter Barbara; siblings, Letha (Robert) LeClare , Geraine (Joe) Eisentraut, Armin (Janet) Arndt, Robert (Katie) Arndt, Danny Arndt, Martin Arndt; brother-in-law, Dean Yoho
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00AM on Monday, April 9, 2018 at ST. MARK LUTHERAN CHURCH (200 Park St. Belgium, WI 53004) with Pastor Wayne King presiding. Visitation will be at EERNISSE FUNERAL HOME (171 N. Royal Ave. Belgium, WI) on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 12:00-4:00PM. There will be an additional visitation at CHURCH on Monday, April 9th beginning at 9:00AM until the time of service. Howard will be laid to rest next to his wife at St. Mary's Lake Church Cemetery.
