He was united in marriage to the late Margaret "Boots" Rassel on July 24, 1954 at St Nicholas Catholic Church in Dacada and together had six children. In 1953 Howie and his brother-in-law Dean Yoho founded Belgium Trucking. The success of Belgium Trucking led them to open How-Dea Service Center on Highway 57 in June of 1967. In 1986 he purchased and developed property near I-43 to build his travel center. Later Howie and Boots built Hobo's Korner Kitchen in May of 1987. Howie was a Lions Club member for over 60 years. He was part of the honorary Belgium Fire Department and belonged to the Belgium American Legion Post 412. Howie was a member of St Mark's Lutheran Church for over 10 years. He also served as Belgium Village President from 1963-1974. Howie and Boots loved to travel during the spring to Arizona. They especially enjoyed going to their cabin in Crivitz, WI.
