Obituary

Herbert Mentzel, Jr., age 84 years, a lifelong resident of Grafton, died early Wednesday morning, January 17, 2018, in his sleep. Born May 28, 1933, son of Herbert and Hilda (nee Bruss) Mentzel, Herb grew up in Grafton and attended local schools, graduating from Grafton High School. On September 22, 1956, Herb was united in marriage with Ruth Viesselmann at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedarburg. The couple settled in Grafton, moving in to the home they had just built. Mr. Mentzel proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War as a cryptographer. Upon his return he took employment with the United States Postal Service. Herb was the first letter carrier in Grafton, and faithfully delivered mail for over 30 years. Herb enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He and his family spent countless weekends camping up north and just enjoying the outdoors. Mr. Mentzel was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church; the property committee was his passion, he played dart-ball with his friends on Monday nights, and later joined the beautiful choir with Ruth. He continued singing even after Ruth preceded him in death in 2013. He will always be remembered for his overflowing cheerfulness and the sparkle in his eyes. His hunting and fishing stories couldn't be beat. Herb leaves behind his daughter Carrie (Russell) Petranech of Grafton, grandchildren Anthony and Anya (fiancé Jesse Kulis) and brother Allen (Diane) Mentzel, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, to whom he is now reunited. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2018 from 2-3:45PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, N60W6047 Columbia Road, Cedarburg, with services following at 3:45PM. He will be laid to rest beside his wife with Military Honors the following day at Immanuel Cemetery, Cedarburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church Property Committee or to the Stars & Stripes Honor Flight, to allow other veterans such at Herb to have such a validating experience. Russ & Carrie want to thank all of his friends and family that visited him last month. The Eernisse Funeral Home in Cedarburg is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.eernissefuneralhome.com .
