Harold Medinger of Port Washington, formerly of Random Lake and Woodruff, passed away peacefully with family members at his side, at the Harbor Club, March 26, 2022. He was 91 years old.
Harold was born in Belgium on February 4, 1931, son of Joseph and Adeline Wellenstein Medinger. He attended local schools, graduating from Port Washington High School with the Class of 49.
Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army with four of his buddies from the Belgium area. He was a member of the 7th Infantry Division during the Korean War conflict. He attained the rank of Sergeant serving 1951- 1953. Harold was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with the Letter "V" for Valor.
On February 14th, 1953 Harold was united in marriage with Kathleen "Katie" Keller at St. Mary's Church in Port Washington. The couple settled in Port Washington and raised their family of six. Harold was a plant operator for Wisconsin Electric Power Plant in Port for 37 years, retiring in 1988.
Fulfilling their love of the North Woods, Harold and Katie moved to Woodruff to enjoy their retirement on Bolton Lake. Harold was an active member of the Men's Club at St. Anthony Catholic Church. He enjoyed golfing local courses and captaining his pontoon boat around the lake. It is here where memories were made by Harold's family and friends spending time in the outdoors fishing, boating, and enjoying the local wildlife – especially loons and eagles.
In 2007 Harold and Katie moved to Random Lake. They regularly attended Our Lady of the Lakes Parish. As Katie developed health issues, Harold became even more devoted to his wife. For over four years he drove daily to Port Washington to be with her. She preceded him in death in 2013.
In 2019, Harold became a resident of Harbor Club in Port Washington. He continued his active social life by welcoming family and friends. The staff at Harbor Club truly became Harold's second family.
Throughout his life, Harold collected baseball cards, sports memorabilia, and coins. More recently, he started sharing his coin collection with his grandchildren by including coins in birthday and Christmas cards. He enjoyed sports, especially watching the Brewers and Packers. Harold's passion for travel and camping created a lifetime of memories for his family. Summers were spent camping throughout the state and around the country, instilling a love of outdoors in his children. Harold also enjoyed his drives around the area, often meeting up with his "Mirror Bar" friends.
He was a Life Member of the Melvin Wester Memorial American Legion Post 412 and VFW Post 5373.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sons Jeff (Laura) of Minocqua, Joel (Sherrie) of San Luis Obispo, CA, Chris (Jacki) of Grafton, Craig (Monica) of the Town of Trenton, daughters Lisa (Chris) Hackbarth of Cedarburg and Jill Douglass of Port Washington. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Harold is further survived by his sister Audrey (Bill) Bowles of Belgium, sister-in-law Karen (the late Jim) Medinger of Plymouth, brother-in-law Allan (Wanda) Keller of Port Washington. He is preceded in death by his wife Katie and brothers Emery (the late Lenore "Lenny") and Jim.
