Mr. Gordon Fillar of Belgium, formerly of Milwaukee, passed away at Ascension Columbia St. Mary's – Ozaukee in Mequon on Friday, May 28, 2021. He was 81 years old.
Gordon was born in Milwaukee on March 16. 1940, son of Theodore and Gertrude Kuglitsch Fillar. He attended local schools, graduating from Rufus King High School - Class of 1958 before enlisting in the US Navy. Gordy served as a photographer and was stationed in London but flew out to other countries on assignment; at one point he even photographed President John F. Kennedy.
On February 6, 1971, Gordon was united in marriage with Judith Crawford at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Milwaukee. The couple moved to Belgium in 1974 and raised their daughter, Kimberly.
Mr. Fillar worked at the Milwaukee Journal for 42 years, mainly in the Paper & Ink Department. He retired in 2002. Gordy was a "fishaholic" and was passionate about fishing whenever he had the chance. His favorite spots included inland lakes like Winnebago where he could take his boat, but he could frequently be found fishing from the shore of Lake Michigan. He fished until he was diagnosed with MG and was physically unable to go anymore. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Gordy and Judy were faithful members of Divine Savior Parish.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 50 years, Judy, and their grandson, Owen Whitman of Washington DC. He is further survived by sister Sandra (Lorin) Hornada of Neosho, sister-in-law Judy Crawford of Almond, nephews David (Sarah) Hughes and James Crawford, nieces Marcia (Robin) Griswald, Marcella (Lenny) Carlton, Melinda (Dave) Trebiatowski, Marilyn (Eric) Beggs and Christy (Ray) Wysocki, other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Fillar Whitman.
The family will receive visitors at Divine Savior - Holy Cross Chapel on Friday, September 10th from 10:30AM until Mass begins at 11AM.
