Obituary

Mrs. Germaine Meyer, formerly of Holden Street in Port Washington, passed away Tuesday morning, March 15, 2016, at Harbor Campus, where she has resided since 2008. She was 93 years old. Germaine was born in Port Washington on September 11, 1922, daughter of Jacob and Susan Theiss Schreiner. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Port Washington High School. On May 8, 1946 she was united in marriage with Frank "Ziggy" Meyer at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The couple had courted through letters exchanged throughout Ziggy's time in the US Army 3rd Armored Division during WWII while he was fighting on the European front. The couple later settled in Port and started their family. Frank preceded her in death in 1987. Mrs. Meyer was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister, sang in the choir and was involved in the Christian Women. She was also a member of the Port Washington Senior Center. While her children were young, she had been a Cub Scout den mother. During the ten years that Frank was mayor, she enjoyed being The First Lady of Port Washington. She liked playing cards, especially bridge and sheepshead, and gardening. She and Ziggy attended the annual 3rd Armored Division reunions for many years and enjoyed keeping in touch with their friends. One vacation they went to Europe where they retraced Ziggy's duty stations during the war. Germaine is survived by her five children: Carol Shenkenberg of Milwaukee, Glenn (Gail) Meyer of Portland, OR, Louise (Bill) Petersen of Madison, Robert (Deb) Meyer of Menomonie and Jacqueline (Atakan) Arica of Chicago, IL. She is further survived by eight grandchildren: Gabriel Crivello, Jessica Meyer, Jacob Meyer, Erica Meyer, Melissa Meyer, Isaac Petersen, Evren Arica and Kenan Arica, nieces, nephews, other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Ziggy, infant son Robert, sister Anna Marie Poull and four brothers: Charles, William, George and James Schreiner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2PM on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will preside. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in St. Mary's Cemetery the following day. The family will receive visitors at the CHURCH on Tuesday from 12-2PM.
