GERALD A. OLSON
Mr. Jerry Olson, formerly of Port Washington, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in Green Bay. He was 80 years old. Gerald was born in St. Paul, MN on April 27, 1936, son of Clifford and Inez (O'Brien) Olson. After high school, Jerry went on to earn his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls in 1958 and his master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He was united in marriage with Dixie Prine at the English-Lutheran Church in Ellsworth on August 2, 1958. Jerry started his career as a high school band teacher in Ellsworth, later moving to Port Washington in 1972 where he taught at Port Washington High School until his retirement in 1998. Jerry could make music many different ways, but he preferred the tuba or stand-up bass. As well as teaching music and directing the different PWHS bands, Jerry directed the Port Summer Theater pit band for many years and was a member of the Port Washington City Band, the Lakeshore Symphonic Band and the Jerry Olson Trio. He also formed the Dixieland bands Cooler By The Lake and the popular Dockside Ramblers, who frequented the corner of Main & Franklin during the Port Washington Farmers Market for many years. When he wasn't making music or teaching, Jerry enjoyed walks down the bike path or into the woods, often accompanied by his daughter Kathy. He also liked reading a good mystery. Mr. Olson was a longtime member of Friedens Evangelical Church in Port Washington. He is survived by his three children: Jonathan (Patti) Olson of Green Bay, Christopher Olson (special friend Bonnie Nelson) of Minneapolis, MN and Kathy (Andrew) Kinney of Santa Clarita, CA. He is further survived by seven grandchildren: Derek (Katie) Olson of Appleton, Taryn Olson (fiancé Ryan Marx) of Freedom, WI, Kendra Olson (special friend Ken Cohen) of Boston, Brady Olson of Madison, Daniel, William and Nicholas Kinney, all of Santa Clarita, CA and great-grandchildren Riker & Loki Olson of Appleton. Also surviving are his sister Marilyn (Larry) Sadler of Eagle Grove, IA, sisters-in-law Kathy Olson of Red Wing, MN and Virginia Hagen of Hopkins, MN, nieces, nephews, other family, and many friends. Jerry is preceded in death by his wife Dixie (2011), and his brother Donald Olson. A Memorial Service is planned for 1PM on Saturday, October 1st, at Friedens Evangelical Church, 454 N. Milwaukee St., Port Washington. Pastor Brandon Lemons will preside. The family will receive visitors at the CHURCH that day from 11AM until services at 1PM.
