Obituary

Mr. George Schmit of Hillcrest Road in Saukville passed away Thursday evening at his home. He was 78 years old. George was born June 19 1932 in Port Washington the son of Nick and Cecelia Schinker Schmit. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952-1960. On May 19 1962 he was united in marriage with Joanne Gonwa at St. Nicholas Church in Dacada. George was employed as a steam fitter at WE Energies for over 35 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish in Saukville where he had been an usher and a St. Vincent de Paul volunteer. He also belonged to the Saukville Landt-Thiel Legion Post 470 and Port Washington VFW Post 5373.nbsp; George enjoyed volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul and Meals on Wheels gardening apple picking listening to classical music participating in card club and spending time with his family and friends. George is survived by his wife Joanne and their 3 children: Brian (Michelle) of Brookfield Ann (John) Pechstein of West Bend and Allan (Paula) of Milton. He is further survived by 9 grandchildren 1 sister Clara (Fritz) Schanen of Friendship 2 brothers: Don (Jenny) Schmit of Kansas City MO and Tom (Diana) Schmit of Jackson 1 brother-in-law Bill (Christy) Gonwa of Weyauwega 3 sisters-in-law: Pat Schmit of Waubeka Linda (Bob) Voigt of Sheboygan and Mary Coppins of Hong Kong nieces nephews other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents his son Mark and 2 brothers: Emmons and Nick. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30AM on Tuesday morning July 6 2010 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 145 W. Church St. in Saukville. Father Thomas Lijewski will officiate. George will be laid to rest in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Immaculate Conception Church.
