George F. Maechtle
George Maechtle, of Waubeka, passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Jennings Terrace in Aurora, IL where he had been a resident. He was 87 years old.
George was born in Port Washington on June 8, 1928, son of Arthur Maechtle and Selma Wegner Maechtle. George's family moved from the family farm on Highway K in Port Washington to Waubeka and ran Maechtle's General Store. George and his brother Ralph operated the store until August of 1988. Following his retirement from the store, George worked at Fredonia Hardware.
George graduated from Port Washington High School in 1945 and attended North Central College in Naperville, IL. On June 6, 1950 he married Iva Mae Peter at Zion Church in Batavia. Together they raised two daughters Sandra and Marcia.
George was a member of Grand Avenue Methodist Church in Port Washington from 1928-1950, and a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church in Batavia, WI, where he taught Sunday School, mentored youth, sang in the church choir and served on numerous committees. He was a member of the Waubeka Fire Department for over 60 years as both a firefighter and EMT, as well as a member of the Flag Day Foundation. George loved to serve others, and enjoyed his years at the store working alongside his brother Ralph, volunteering as a Waubeka firefighter, and hanging flags throughout Waubeka for every patriotic holiday.
He is survived by his two daughters Sandra (Tom) Blumenberg of Hayward, WI and Marcia (Mike) Gaspari of Batavia, IL, two grandchildren Andrea (Misiel) Valles and Noel Gaspari, and sisters-in-law Esther Maechtle, Margie Peter and Merely Melius. He is further survived by numerous Maechtle, Melius and Peter nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. George is preceded in death by his parents Art and Selma, his wife Iva Mae, his brother Ralph, two brothers-in-law Rollin Peter and Russell Melius, his niece Gloria Maechtle Henkle and his nephew Gabe Peter.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 7 PM at Zion United Methodist Church, N1667 Highway 28, Batavia. Pastor Gail Mitchell will preside over the service. George will be laid to rest next to his wife in Zion United Cemetery in Batavia. Visitation for George will take place at the CHURCH on Tuesday, November 24th from 5-7 PM, with a Fire Department walkthrough at 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to the Waubeka Fire Department, Flag Day Foundation or Zion United Methodist Church. The Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington is honored to serve the family.
