Genevieve Rosanne Owens, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at the age of 89. She was born at home in Crofton, Nebraska, on September 20, 1929 to Frank and Martha (nee Pick) Foecke.
She received her bachelor's degree from Wayne State College in Nebraska and master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. She married Owen Haydn Owens in Hartington, NE, on August 18, 1952. Genevieve was a teacher for parts of five decades. In Nebraska, she taught in a one-room school for several years, and later taught high school math. While the family lived in Iowa, she was a Jr. High math teacher after working as a bookkeeper. After the family moved to Wisconsin in 1970, and she taught in the Fennimore schools for 21 years, including the 11 years prior to retirement teaching 4th grade, her favorite.
Genevieve and Haydn traveled extensively visiting all fifty states and more than a dozen foreign countries. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, sewing, furniture refinishing, crossword puzzles and watching the Brewers and Packers. She was an avid gardener and always had beautiful flower beds.
Genevieve is survived by her sons Stephen (Sue) of Greendale, WI, Gregory (Beverly) of Anchorage, AK, and two daughters, Karen (Tim Waddell) of Westfield, NJ, and Nancy (Robert Martins) of Cedarburg, WI; eleven grandchildren: Becky Owens, Brian (Jess) Owens, Briana Owens, Margo (Chris) Fliss, Keely Owens, Paul Owens, Peter Waddell, Joe Waddell, James Martins, Andrew Martins, Gregory Martins, and great grandchild Ethan Owens; siblings: Mildred (Bob) Cogdill of Dunlap, IA, Gerelda (Charles) Tramp of Crofton, NE, Jerome (Carolyn Meinhardt) Froecke of Lictchfield, MN, Mary Davis of Denver, CO, Barbara (Charles) MacDonald of Ensacola, FL, sister-in-law Shirly Foecke of Ocean Springs, MS, brothers-in-law: Lowell of Greenbelt, MD, and Stanley of Omaha, NE. She is further survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Genevieve is preceded in death by her husband, Owen Haydn, her son, Owen Haydn, Jr. "Denny," parents, siblings Harold Foecke, Dolores (Ferdie) Lintel, Ralph Foecke, Sister Rhoda Foecke, Dennis Foecke, Irene Goeken, brother-in-law Orvid and a sister-in-law Faith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church NORTH (1375 Covered Bridge Road, Cedarburg, WI 53012) with Father Patrick Burns presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 3:00 pm until the time of service at 4:00 pm. Genevieve will be laid to rest next to her husband Haydn in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fennimore, WI, where she lived for forty-five years.
