Obituary

Surrounded by family and love, Gail peacefully passed into eternal life on March 17, 2026.

Gail was born on July 25, 1928, to the late Erving and Blanche (Teske) Green in Antigo, Wisconsin. She cherished her siblings, Lorraine, Jim, Joan and Barbara. The Green family were members of the First Congregational Church of Antigo. Much of Gail’s youth was spent at the family’s Bass Lake cottage, which was built by her parents and beloved brother, where she and her siblings swam, golfed, and played cards. Gail graduated from Antigo High School in 1946, where she enjoyed cheerleading, and created lifelong friendships.

After high school, Gail moved to Milwaukee and was employed at United States Steel. While in Milwaukee, she met the love of her life, Gerald “Jerry” Henke, and on August 6, 1955, they bonded together as One, at St. Hyacinths Catholic Church in Antigo, Wisconsin. They honeymooned at the Upper Hot Springs in Banff, Canada, traveling in their new 1955 Buick Special.

In 1958, Gail and Jerry built a home in Cedarburg, raised a family, and spent 69 wonderful years together. Jerry was Gail’s soulmate, her “rock,” and they were often holding each other’s hands. Gail cherished her family life in Cedarburg: she raised three children, two family canine companions, Dynamite “Dyna” and Cinders, and kept the financial books for Ozaukee Pattern Company. She made many neighborhood friends, and enjoyed picnics at the Port Washington Bluffs, block parties, and bicycle parades with the neighborhood children.

Gail was active in Cedarburg’s community: she was a member of the Cedarburg Junior Women’s Club, a Cub Scouts Den-mother, and volunteered at the Lasata Care Center, where she found artistic joy making ceramic figures with residents, and served as President of the Lasata Volunteers. Gail thoroughly enjoyed her friends in the Sheepshead and Bridge clubs. In 1984, Gail became a lung cancer survivor and miraculously remained free of cancer for the rest of her life. In 2002, at St John’s Cathedral, Milwaukee, Gail joined the Catholic Faith, through the Rite of Christian Initiation.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children; Mark Henke, Jean (William) Masters and James (Wendy) Henke, along with her cherished granddaughters, Lauren and Grace Henke.

A mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 11:30 AM. The family will greet friends and relatives at St. Francis Borgia, 1375 Covered Bridge Road, Cedarburg from 9:30 AM until 11:15 AM. Gail will be laid to eternal rest, next to Jerry, at St. Francis Borgia Cemetery, Cedarburg, located at 7649 Pioneer Rd, Mequon, WI.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society, or St. Francis Borgia Parish’s cemetery fund.

The family sincerely thanks Father Patrick Burns, Theresa Remzik-Traczek, Hamilton House, Silverado Memory Care-North Shore, Brighton Hospice, and Eernisse Funeral Home.
