Francis Henry Winkel The soul of Francis Henry Winkel age 86 was set free on Thursday April 3 2008. Frank formerly of Muscatine Iowa stepped into eternity from his home in Anita's Garden Port Washington where he had been residing in good health and spirit. Frank was born in Green Bay WI on November 25 1921 the son of Henry Michael and Agnes Cecilia Braun Winkel. Frank served as a Pharmacist Mate in the United States Coast Guard during WWII. After the war he graduated with a BS in Chemistry from St. Norbert College. Frank's first job took him to the Dept. of Agriculture in Madison WI as a research scientist identifying the anthrax virus and various other diseases. He married Mary Louise Aldeweireidt Terre on May 21 1953. Later he became a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Iowa Iowa City where he eventually retired. He has left a significant legacy of undying commitment to his family and country. Frank will be remembered and honored for his charismatic presence humble dignity articulate delivery of wisdom quick/cleaver wit and tenacious spirit. The homes he single-handedly built will serve as earthly monuments bearing witness of his strength and dedication as a provider. He was the loving dad of six children and will be deeply missed by three daughters: Marilynn (Robert) Bordner of Van Nyes CA Mary Frances Bernadette of Port Washington WI Jeanne Marie (Craig) Ness of Bristol WI as well as by his two sons Mark (Diana) Winkel of Letts IA and Pierre (Tamara) Winkel of Sleepy Hollow IL. In addition he will be remembered by his 11 grandchildren; Sasha Tammy Patrick Abram RaChelle Callie Rose Emery Jenny Chris Elle' and Gabriel and eight great-grandchildren Stephanie Kimme Brittany Ryan Miles Danielle Ronnie and Ethan. He now resides at peace beside his beloved wife Mary Louise and is preceded in his journey by his daughter Michiel Louise Winkel sisters Cecila Bates Bernadette Bries and parents Henry and Agnes Winkel. Visitation will be held at the Eernisse Funeral Home 1600 W. Grand Ave. in Port Washington on Monday evening April 7 6-7PM with a Rosary service at 7PM. A second visitation will take place on Tuesday April 8 from 10-11 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church 205 Milwaukee St. Waterloo with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Father Tom Gillespie will officiate the service. He will be laid to rest with full military rites in the St. Joseph Cemetery Waterloo next to his beloved wife Mary Louise. Pallbearers will be Mark Winkel Pierre Winkel Abram Nelson Emery Nelson Chris Winkel Robert Bordner Craig Ness and Michael Thurow.
