Obituary

Elmer Richard Benson, of Cedarburg, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. He was 94 years old.

Elmer was born July 26, 1929, in Buffalo, New York, to Alfred and Hilda (Boffey) Benson. On October 28, 1950, he was united in marriage to Patricia Madden, and they spent 68 enjoyable years together.

He devoted his life to his career in the steel industry, having started Charter Steel Mills in Saukville. Throughout his career, he traveled to various locations to establish and manage steel mills, showcasing his knowledge in making the smallest steel rod and management skills. In 1963 he moved his family to Quebec for two years, then to Grand Island, New York from 1966-1972, to Indiana 1973-1979, to Port Washington in 1979-1989, South Carolina from 1989-1992, Florida in 1992-2014, then back to Wisconsin. His knowledge was sought after all over the world. He even had an article written about him in the Steel Workers Magazine. Elmer's dedication and hard work left a lasting impact on all the locations he touched.

In addition to his professional achievements, Elmer had a passion for the arts and enjoyed expressing his creativity through various media forms. He also found joy in fishing, golfing, playing cards, and building model ships. His diverse interests and talents made him a well-rounded individual cherished by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish Elmer's memory are his children; Rick (Sharon) Benson of New York, Jim (Maria) Benson of Alaska, Steve (Rebecca) Benson of Indiana, Suzanne (Doug) Lottes of Michigan, along with Tim (Gynne) Benson, Maryanne (Tom) Seyfert, Pete (Erna) Benson and his daughter-in-law Renee Benson all of Wisconsin. He is further survived by 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and his sister-in-law, Peg Dansereau of Texas.

He is preceded in death by his wife Patricia and his sons, Bob and Tom Benson.

A celebration of Elmer's life will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Eernisse Funeral Home, 1167 Washington Ave, Cedarburg. The family will greet guests from 1:00 PM until the time of service.

The family would like to thank Lasata Crossing for the amazing job they did for Elmer and Pat to make their lives enjoyable.
