Ellie brought her own distinct personality, humor, and determination to the things she enjoyed.

Eleonore “Ellie” Tankovitch, of Port Washington, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday afternoon, August 25, 2026, at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. She was 75 years old.

Ellie, affectionately known as “Nonnie” in her youth, was born in Milwaukee on December 7, 1950, the daughter of William and Ora (nee Drapp) Spiering. She grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from Custer High School with the Class of 1967. Following high school, Ellie attended cosmetology school in Milwaukee and began her career as a hair stylist.

In 1968, Ellie met the love of her life, John “Tank” Tankovitch, at a Civil Air Patrol event. The two were married in Milwaukee on September 23, 1972, beginning more than 50 years of marriage filled with love, family, friendship, and laughter. Together, they welcomed two children, Jennifer and Alan, and in 1976 made their home in Port Washington.

Ellie later returned to college and earned her associate degree in accounting. She went on to work as an accountant for the UWM Foundation, where she remained until her retirement.

A woman of many talents and interests, Ellie found great joy in creativity. She loved crafting, crocheting, drawing, and sewing, and she had a gift for adding her own personal touch to the things she created. Whether drawing a small sketch on a holiday or birthday card, crocheting a blanket for one of her grandchildren, or making something especially for someone she loved, Ellie expressed herself through the thoughtful details that made each gift uniquely hers. She was also an exceptional cook and baker, generously sharing meals and treats with family and friends.

Ellie carried herself with a quiet, thoughtful confidence. She could be reserved, but those who knew her well understood that a perfectly timed sassy remark was often waiting just beneath the surface. She knew how she wanted things done and was never afraid to make that known, especially when something needed to be done just right. She valued quality over quantity in her relationships, cherishing her close circle of family and friends deeply and sincerely.

Throughout the years, Ellie gave her time and talents in many ways. She served as a Girl Scout leader and Cookie Mom for many years, enjoyed bowling with the Willy’s Wish team, and looked forward to playing in cribbage tournaments. Whether through friendship, family gatherings, creative projects, or friendly competition, Ellie brought her own distinct personality, humor, and determination to the things she enjoyed.

Above all, Ellie treasured her family. She will be deeply missed by her children, Jennifer (Rob) Clearwater and Alan (Pam) Tankovitch; and her three beloved grandchildren, Emily, Paige, and Roman. She is further survived by her brothers, Gene (Mary) Spiering and William R. Spiering; her sister, Linda Lynn; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

Ellie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ora; her brother-in-law, Bud Lynn; and her beloved husband, John.

In accordance with Ellie’s wishes, private family services will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Port Washington.

The family asks that any memorial gifts be directed to the Zoological Society of Milwaukee in support of the African elephant exhibit.
