Eileen Louella Manore, age 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, November 7, 2015. Her son William and daughter-in-law Kathryn were privileged to be at her side.
Born on June 16, 1920, Eileen was the 3rd of 8 children of Donald Smith and Mary (McEvoy) Smith, of Wyandotte, Mi. Family legend says she weighed 2-lbs at birth and came home in a shoebox. In 1938 she graduated from Wyandotte's Theodore Roosevelt High School. She had a long 40 year career as an operator for Michigan Bell. She took great pride in working for the telephone company, loved meeting new crew members and making new friends.
Eileen married William (Bill) James Manore of River Rouge Michigan, on November 14, 1942. Bill left almost immediately for the South Pacific during WWII. At the end of the war, they made Wyandotte their home. Eileen and Bill had 3 children: William Francis Manor of Marshfield Wi, Michele Mary Pokorsky of Port Washington, Wi, and Diane Margaret Manor of Oak Creek, Wi.
Life in Wyandotte centered around her family, church and work. She made sure everyone got the attention they needed. She loved quizzing her children on spelling words and flash cards in the morning. The children learned early how to cook, clean and iron clothes, needed skills for a family with a working mom. Her work made it possible for all 3 of her children to graduate from Marquette University.
Early in their marriage, several of Bill's brothers and sisters decided to purchase property on Lake Erie, outside Lemington, Ontario. Together the family constructed a cottage to accommodate all the families. It became a magical weekend and summer retreat, shaping the lives of adults and children forever. Eileen loved time at the cottage, being at the beach and watching the water. Her 5-cup salad was a favorite of the family dinners. She particularly enjoyed the fresh, broiled, fish dinners on Sunday before heading home.
Eileen and Bill lived in Wyandotte until 2002 when age and health resulted in a move to Wisconsin to be closer to children and grandchildren. Bill passed later that year. Eileen stayed in Port Washington for 13 additional years. Her many interests including: nice restaurants, her special TV programs, catching-up on the royal family, the Sunday New York Times, purchasing her beloved lottery tickets and shopping. She showered everyone with love and the famous Grandma presents, with sales tags still attached. She would regale everyone with the hunting saga of each good find, becoming a family tradition.
Predeceasing Eileen were her husband William, parents and 7 siblings. Her sisters were Mary (Fred) Manore, Betty (Don) Maveal, Peggy (Mark) Slagle, and Florence (Jack) Laziere. Her brothers were Cleon (died in infancy), Donald (Betty) and Bernard (Beverly) Smith.
