EDWARD A. RUDOLPH, JR.
Edward (Ed) Andrew Rudolph, Port Washington, passed away on Saturday, January 21st, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was 76 years old.
Ed was born on September 14, 1940 to Edward A, Sr. and Ann M. (Schramm) Rudolph in Fond du Lac, WI. He graduated from Campbellsport High School in 1958, and married Karen (Brown) Rudolph on August 12, 1972, at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Kewaskum.
In 1963, Ed began his extensive career in law enforcement and public service. He was hired at that time as a patrolman by the Port Washington Police Department and attended the City of Milwaukee Police Academy as a police recruit. He was subsequently promoted to sergeant in 1967 and to chief of the Port Washington Police Department in 1969. Ed graduated with an Associate degree in political science in 1974 from Milwaukee Area Technical College and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Milton College in 1979. He also attended the prestigious FBI National Academy, Quantico, VA, graduating as a member of the 101st session on June 19, 1975. Ed retired from Port Washington Police Department in December of 2004 following a career of nearly 42 years of dedicated service to the department and the community, 35 of those years as Police Chief.
During his career, Ed was awarded the Son's of the American Revolution (SAR) National Society's Law Enforcement Commendation Medal in 1979, recognizing "exceptional service or accomplishment in the field of law enforcement" and is reserved for those who have served with distinction and devotion in the field of law enforcement. He was a life member of the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association (WCPA), serving as Treasurer for 26 years. Ed also served in each WI FBINAA Chapter Board position, culminating in his term as chapter president in 1987. He continued to be an active member, attending WI Chapter functions as his health permitted. For many years Ed also taught police science and traffic safety courses at Lakeshore Technical College, Moraine Park, and MATC, and he continued teaching until his health forced retirement in 2014. Ed thoroughly enjoyed his summer job as a water patrol officer for the Town of Osceola, working boat patrol on Long Lake.
Ed was very proud to be part of a large Masonic family. He became a member of Ozaukee Lodge #17 in 1980 and served as Worshipful Master in 1982 and 1983, and Treasurer from 1990-1995. Ed joined Tripoli Shrine in December 1986 and served as Potentate of the Tripoli Shriners, Milwaukee in 2007, and he served as a board member of the Scimitar Foundation. Ed was a member of the Tripoli Animal Unit where he was delighted to be known as Cookie Monster. Over the years he belonged to the Directors Staff, the Provost Unit, Red Fez, many Shrine Clubs, and the Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a member of George Washington Masonic Lodge #337, and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Green Bay. In 1992 the Rudolph family was honored to be chosen the Scottish Rite, Valley of Milwaukee, Masonic Family of the Year. Ed was also a member of Ozaukee Chapter #147, Order of Eastern Star.
His greatest Masonic joy was serving as the Associate Guardian of Bethel #60, Port Washington, from 1984 to 1992. He was proud to be elected a Member of Honor by the daughters of Bethel #60 in 1996, the highest honor bestowed upon a non-member. He served as the Associate Guardian of the Grand Bethel of Wisconsin from 1989 to 1995. Dad Rudolph was well known throughout the state for his many silly pranks and wise counsel. Daughters enjoyed seeing him on the sidelines and at events even after his terms had ended.
Ed was a founding member of the Ozaukee Unit of the American Cancer Society and served as the Daffodil Chairman for 8 years. He is also a longtime Ozaukee County Salvation Army Board member and Countertop Red Kettle Chairman for 12 years.
In addition to his wife Karen, Ed is survived by his daughters Carrie Meyer of Wauwatosa, Jennie Rudolph of Gilbert, AZ, and Mandie (Matthew) Pearce of Germantown, granddaughters Monica, Mollie and Maya Meyer, and Trinity Pearce. He lived a blessed life with family and close friends. His family, friends, colleagues and all who were blessed to know Ed will fondly remember him as a kind man who always went out of his way to help others.
Funeral Services for Ed will be held on Sunday, January 29th at St. Peter United Church of Christ, 166 W. Dekora St., Saukville. A Masonic service will begin at 4:30PM, followed by services at 5PM, concelebrated by Rev. Craig Modahl and Ed's cousin Fr. Chuck Schramm. The family will receive visitors at the CHURCH on Sunday from 12:30-4:30PM.
His family is grateful for his faithful friends who were there right up until the very end, Captain Mike Keller and retired Chief (Saukville) Bill Meloy. There is no way we can possibly express our appreciation to the staff at The Lighthouse of West Bend for the patient, loving care Ed received these last two years.
Memorial donations can be made in Ed's name to Shriners Hospital for Children.
