Dwight A. Shanks passed away peacefully on March 23, 2019 at the age of 101. He was born on August 30, 1917 in Roseville, IL the son of the late Perry and Carrie (nee Frazee). He was the beloved husband of the late Lena (nee Flood) from Smithshire, IL and loving father of Connie (Larry) Rehbaum of Cedarburg, WI and Dennis (Sherry) Shanks of Elk Horn, KY, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
After graduating high school in Roseville in 1935, he went on to graduate in 1939 from the University if Illinois in Champagne, IL with a B.S. degree and an Army ROTC commission. In January 1942, he was called to active duty and reported to Camp Wallace in El Paso, TX where he married Lena. He always said he almost made it to the border! Eventually his unit boarded the Queen Mary and shipped to Scotland. Dwight was the intelligence officer of the 26th Anti-Aircraft Group and received a silver battle star for participation in five European campaigns. After the war, he served in the active reserves retiring as a Lt. Col. In 1980. Dwight was a member of the American legion Post in West Bend and later in Cedarburg. After the war Dwight, Lena and their daughter went back to Illinois, where he earned his master's degree in biology from the university of Illinois. He taught in Illinois for a short time before moving his wife and daughter to Waukesha, WI in 1947. In 1950 they had a son Dennis. Their home was on the south side of Waukesha across from Roberta Park and they enjoyed living there with wonderful neighbors and friends. Dwight taught biology for 33 years at Waukesha High School at both the Central and South campus. He was an assistant football and track coach in the early years. He also taught night classes as an adjunct professor for 12 years at Carroll College. He worked part-time for many years at the Waukesha water purification plant chemically testing water. After retirement, he and Lena moved to West Bend, where he continued teaching for the Learning in Retirement program at WCTC in Pewaukee. He enjoyed fixing antique clocks, woodworking and learning to use his computer. In 2009 he moved to an apartment at Lasata Heights in Cedarburg, WI where he helped organize and run a current events class. Once a teacher always a teacher! At age 90, Dwight and his son-in-law participated in the first Ozaukee County Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and enjoyed it immensely. At the age of 99, he was awarded the Legion of Honor medal by the government of France for his WWII service. Dwight will be interred during a private ceremony at Washington County Memorial Park next to his wife Lena. Family misses them both very much. Full military honors will take place.
Dwight's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to his friends and the staff at Lasata Heights and The Crossings and Care Center in Cedarburg, WI for their friendship, help and wonderful care.
