IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dr. Thomas Anthony
O'Connor
March 23, 1940 – May 11, 2024
Thomas Anthony O'Connor, age 84, died peacefully at a Madison hospital surrounded by family on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
A native of Janesville, Wisconsin, Tom was born to Willard and Julia Margaret O'Connor. His Irish Catholic household stressed the importance of education, and Tom was a good student who was active in St. Mary's Catholic Church.
After earning an English degree at Marquette University, Tom planned to study engineering until a "Time" magazine article covered employment difficulties for recent graduates, so instead he chose to attend Marquette University Medical School to become a physician, embarking on a career in emergency and family practice medicine that spanned 55 years.
He enjoyed his work and gatherings with family, especially O'Connor family reunions. He stayed sharp with the Jumble and Sudoku and enjoyed spending time with his friends in the Janesville community, playing bridge and golf, watching sports, being Irish and driving his '68 Chevy Impala convertible with the top down.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents and sister Genevieve Oswald. He is survived by his children Daniel (Nicole), Maureen (MB), William (Alyssa) and Andrew (Ashley); mother of his children Rosemary O'Connor; his grandchildren; siblings Margaret Mary, Jim, and Joe; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 7 at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at Lumen Christi Catholic Church, 2750 W. Mequon Road in Mequon with a reception to follow. Internment will be private.
The family would like to thank his caregiver, Lisa, Dr. Keefe's Oncology team at the Van Dyke Cancer Center and Meriter Hospital staff, including doctors Ciske, Espinoza and Talbot, the palliative care team, social workers, chaplains and the many compassionate nurses and CNAs for their expertise and exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Medical College of Wisconsin. Checks written out to the Medical College of Wisconsin should be sent to: Medical College of Wisconsin, Attn: Office of Institutional Advancement, P.O. Box 26509, Milwaukee, WI 53226-0509.
