Obituary

DOROTHY ELLEN KELM Dorothy Kelm a long time resident of Port Washington passed away on Tuesday morning August 23 2005 at her home in Santa Barbara CA. after suffering a heart attack in her sleep. She was born November 3 1913 in Hillsdale MI daughter of James and Leila English Carmichael. She earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree at Bowling Green University OH in 1938. She taught Home Economics for one year before doing her Graduate studies at the University of North Carolina Greensboro NC. She later interned at Cincinnati University Hospital. After her internship she took a position as a Therapeutic Dietician at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She remained in New York until her marriage to 1st Lt. Arthur W. Kelm at Fort Benning GA. Arthur was stationed at Fort Benning Camp Robinson Little Rock AR and Camp Cook which is now Vandenberg AFB CA. During the 18 months Arthur was stationed at Camp Cook Dorothy lived in nereby Santa Barbara CA. This is where the love affair with Santa Barbara took place as she watched at the train station in Santa Barbara as Arthur and the rest of his Army unit set off for Europe and ultimately the Invasion of France. Dorothy left Santa Barbara and returned to New York City and became the receptionist at Rockerfeller Center. At the end of the war Arthur entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Dorothy accepted a teaching position in Madison. In 1950 Dorothy and Arthur moved to Port Washington to begin teaching careers in the Port Washington-Saukville School District. They both retired in 1974. Arthur preceded her in death in 1992. Dorothy is survived by her son Dr. John A. Kelm and his wife Jacqueline Kelm of the Town of Saukville and a daughter Linda Hatland of Port Washington. Dorothy also enjoyed nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Dorothy will be buried next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery. Private family services will be held. Dorothy loved nature and was a member of the Port Washington Garden Club for over 50 years. The family has asked that any memorials be given in her memory to the Port Washington Garden Club in care of Tom Hudson 822 W. Grand Ave. Port Washington.
