Dorothy Mary Doyle (née Hoenig) of Cedarburg, WI, formerly of Arlington Heights, IL, was taken to eternal rest on April 20, 2019. Dorothy was born in Chicago, IL, on August 15, 1921, and was the devoted daughter of the late John and Theresa (née Hoefler) Hoenig. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers John and Robert and her sisters Charlotte Hoenig, Constance Butler and Rita Morrison.
Dorothy grew up in Chicago and graduated from Immaculata High School. Family commitments prevented her from attending college to become a nurse, so she began her career at Kemper Insurance and then the Milwaukee Road. She was hardworking and never complained when family took precedence over self. When her parents needed her, she went to manage the Hoenig Bakery at 6112 W. Addison St. in Chicago.
Robert F. Doyle (d: March 1, 1990) and Dorothy were married in 1951 at St. Michael's Church. Their family grew quickly, and after their third child, Dorothy left the family bakery to be home. In 1966, after six moves and seven children, they settled in Arlington Heights, IL, where she remained until moving to Cedarburg in 2004.
Dorothy was a very spiritual person and a good and faithful servant to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She attended daily mass for many years and was a student of the Bible for most of her adult life. As her family continued to grow, so did her prayer intentions. Her faith enabled her to get through the difficult and challenging times during her 97-plus years.
Dorothy never lost her passion for the study and enjoyment of music, and she was an accomplished musician. She began piano lessons in second grade and then found her soprano voice in high school. She studied under Rosa Raisa as an operatic soprano and performed in the chorus of the Chicago Civic Opera house. After starting her family, she continued to sing in her church choir and eventually became a long-time member of the Niles Concert Choir. It was the one thing she did for herself. In her years in Cedarburg, the highlight of the Christmas season was attending the MSO Christmas concert at the CPAC.
Dorothy was a life-long learner and highly educated. She was bilingual in German and English and went on to study Latin. She read voraciously and was well-versed in history, classical music, literature and politics. An advocate for education, she strongly encouraged her seven children to continue their education after high school to reach their full potential.
Most importantly, Dorothy loved her family. She was a devoted mom and grandma. She was the ultimate hostess for holidays, birthdays and graduations. She was famous for her Thanksgiving feast, her German comfort foods and her stellar baking. She loved the opera, movies, plays, concerts, bridge, yoga, Cedarburg High baseball games, Sunday dinners, sharing a big, buttery bowl of popcorn and chocolate ice cream.
She is survived by her children Mary Kathleen Stalter (Ken), Sharon Quinn (Bob), Patricia Holoyda (Basil), Timothy (Jacki), Therese Jackson (Bill), Lee (Diane) and Jacqueline Glomski (Dwayne); and her youngest sister Patricia Heyd (Richard). She is further survived by 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 3, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church SOUTH (N44 W6055 Hamilton Road in Cedarburg). Visitation will be held prior to mass at the CHURCH from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Memorials in Dorothy's name to The Cedarburg Senior Center or a veteran's organization of your choice are appreciated.
