Obituary

Doris Mary (Tackes) May of Port Washington, WI passed away peacefully at her vacation home in Friendship, WI on Saturday, October 4, 2025. Doris was born on September 15, 1947, to George E. and Rosalie C. (Roob) Tackes. She was 78 years old.

Doris grew up on the family farm with her sisters Rita Mae and Carol Ann and her brother Harold George. She graduated from St. Nicholas Catholic School in Dacada, WI in 1961 and from Random Lake High School in 1965.

Doris was employed at the Allen Edmonds shoe factory in Belgium, WI until it burned down in January 1984. She then worked for three years in Lake Church, WI for Allen Edmonds and in 1987 worked with the company at its new location in Port Washington until she retired in 2009.

Doris lived on the family farm until her parents died, she then moved to Belgium where she lived until she married Anthony May on July 31, 1993. Together they bought a house in Port Washington. "Tony" liked woodworking, so she pitched in to help him and painted many of the creations they made.

Doris loved to go shopping at thrift and antique stores. She also enjoyed crocheting and made scarves, hats and afghans which she gifted to many family members and close friends especially the last three years after being diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in May of 2022. She wore down many crochet hooks.

Doris made one final trip to California with Tony before he died in January 2015 to visit family.

She was proud of the fact that she had her picture taken (and put in the Ozaukee Press) with then President George W. Bush who had visited Port Washington and the shoe factory on July 11, 2006.

Doris is survived by her stepchildren Yolanda "Loni" (friend Robert Dabbs) Yarbar of Lodi, CA, Edgar Allen (the late Jackie) May of Friendship, WI, Tracy (Bill) Wilson and Cliff May all of West Bend, WI. She is further survived by her sisters Rita (the late Ralph) Rady, Carol Tackes and brother Harold (Diane) Tackes, many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws James and Delia Miki Hirstein May.

All are welcome to attend her funeral service to be held at 6:00pm on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington, WI. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home from 4:00-6:00pm.

The family wishes to thank Roseberry Funeral Home, Eernisse Funeral Home, Heartland Hospice, the many home care nurses and aides who cared for her, the chaplain and priest who gave her the last rights and prayed with her.
