Obituary

Doris Goemer Olson, formerly of Saukville, passed to eternal life on December 11th, 2018. Born in Milwaukee in 1924 her family moved to Saukville where they farmed and later ran a tavern. She became a member of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church and played basketball in a county-wide church league. She graduated from Port Washington High School in 1943. In the early 1940s she worked seasonally at the Saukville Canning Company. There she met Kenneth Olson, another employee of the cannery. After the outbreak of World War II Ken joined the Army Air Force and became a bombardier flying heavy bombers in Europe. Doris contributed to the war effort by working at a munitions factory. In June of 1945 Ken returned from the war and Doris and Ken were married at Saint Peter's. The young couple moved to Sturtevant. After a few years Ken's employer relocated them to southern Illinois. During their thirty-five years in Illinois they raised two sons. While Ken rose from machine operator to CEO of the company, Doris focused on the home front but also became very active in the community and in the church. She was president of the local women's club and was the first women Elder in her church. After concluding nearly forty years with his original company Ken was asked by a European company to build and staff a factory and to build a customer base in North America. That took them to Mebane, North Carolina where Doris became active in lay leadership of her new church by once again serving as an Elder. After Ken retired from his business career they remained in Mebane. Upon Ken's death in 2016 Doris returned to Wisconsin to live near her oldest son. She resided at "The Cottages" the memory care unit of Cedar Community in West Bend. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Norma Goemer; husband, Kenneth Olson; sister, Myrtle Demerath; two brothers in law, one sister in law; and one niece. She is survived by two sons: Darrell (Janice) of Grafton and Jon (Annette) of Saratoga CA; four grandchildren: Elana, Brian, Meredith and Stephanie; three great grandchildren: Piper, William and Jack: and three nieces. A memorial service will be held at Parkside Community Church of Christ 166 West Dekora Street Saukville, WI 53080 (Formerly St. Peter's) on January 12 at 11AM. The family would like to thank the staff of Neighborhood #3 at The Cottages for their care and friendship during Doris's two-year residence, as well as the Cedar Community Hospice team for their guidance and specialized form of care over the past three months. In lieu of flowers the family suggests those wishing to honor Doris through memoriam consider Cedar Community Hospice.
