Obituary

Donald E. Fisher Donald E. Fisher age 89 years of the Town of Belgium passed away peacefully on July 11 2007 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born in Wilkinsburg PA on October 13 1917 son of Arthur Fisher and Mabel Montgomery Fisher. On June 5 1941 he married Jean Stoneman in Lake Geneva WI. Mr. Fisher attended the University of Wisconsin and Penn State University graduating with a BS in Biochemistry in 1947. He pursued a career that first took him to Pillsbury Mills in Springfield IL and Minneapolis MN. He did much of the early formulation on prepared mixes for hot rolls and angel food cake and participated in staging the first Pillsbury Bake-Off competition. His next career move was to Monsanto Chemical Co. in St. Louis MO. In 1956 he came to Wisconsin as a Vice President at Red Star Yeast. Three years later he formed his own company Agate Foods which represented a number of other companies one of which Dairyland Food Laboratories Inc. Waukesha hired him as their President/ CEO. The manufacture and sale of their enzyme products for use in foods and pharmaceuticals took him to over 30 countries. Henry Kissinger used him as an emissary to the Russian Minister of Agriculture and as a people person he often had interesting experiences; sharing a plane seat with Tippy Hedron on a day long trip from South America providing refrigerator space for Jane Fonda's infant's formula and lunching with her and her mother-in-law in Russia and frequent chats with Catherine Clarke. In his 25 years of retirement Don actively pursued his interests in travel and in people hosting frequent foreign visitors at his home. His love of gardening resulted in three gold medal awards from the Wisconsin Landscape Federation for a Japanese Garden a front entry and an herb garden. His interests in herbs lead him to join the Wisconsin Unit of the Herb Society of America as its first male member. He studied Ginseng and mint farming preparing papers on both. He chaired one of the annual Herb Fairs at Boerner Botanical Gardens and co-chaired their national convention in Milwaukee in 1982. Don was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity a Past President of the Lake Shore Citizens League and an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Sheboygan. When Grace Episcopal Church began a remodeling project at their 150 anniversary he was instrumental in planning a columbarium garden arranging for an architect to provide plans and overseeing and supporting the work. Mr. Fisher is survived by his wife of 66 years Jean of the Town of Belgium his two children; Gerald (Marni) Fisher of Madison and Jill (the late Henry) Kunsmann of the Town of Belgium. He is further survived by his three grandchildren; Hannelore (Dan) Bruhn Heinzel (Kai-i) Kunsmann and Erik Kunsmann two great-grandchildren other relatives and many many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter. Memorial services for Donald will be held on Saturday July 21st 10 AM at Grace Episcopal Church 630 Ontario Ave. Sheboygan with Father Rex Perry officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials suggested to Grace Episcopal Church or Heartland Hospice suggested. The Eernisse Funeral Home Port Washington is assisting the family.
